Martin Brundle has spotted something ‘disturbing’ from Lewis Hamilton

Martin Brundle feels Lewis Hamilton ‘lost a bit of confidence’ after the Sky Sports F1 pundit spotted something ‘quite disturbing’ with how the Mercedes driver has been.

The 39-year-old recently ended his 945-day wait for another Grand Prix victory at the British GP. It brought the curtain down on the darkest era of his career as Hamilton became a nine-time winner around Silverstone. No driver has ever won more Grand Prix at one single track.

Mercedes failing to get a grip on the ground effect regulations Formula 1 introduced in 2022 triggered Hamilton’s first-ever winless season. The Silver Arrows’ continued difficulties with the regulations in 2023 even saw them fail to win a Grand Prix for the first time since 2011.

Hamilton won at least one Grand Prix in every season since debuting in F1 for McLaren back in 2007. He has even won more races than any driver has in Formula 1‘s history to date with a record 104. The Briton also boasts the records for the most poles (104) and podiums (199).

But it took Hamilton until the Spanish GP to claim his first podium this season and British GP to win again. Now, Brundle admits Hamilton likely lost some confidence having also watched George Russell dominate the head-to-head battle in the Mercedes garage so far this season.

The most telling factor, however, is how Hamilton spoke in his interviews before winning the British GP. Brundle feels the tone of his statements was ‘actually quite disturbing’ on review. He also thinks it has been hard for Hamilton to keep his spirits high with 2024 his 18th term.

“Lewis was really in the doldrums,” Brundle said on Sky Sports F1 (20/7, 12:21). “And when we look back at the footage, it’s actually quite disturbing. Lewis’ pen interviews [and] Lewis’ radio calls. He’s been through a pretty tough place and I think he lost a bit of confidence.

“At the end of the day, the drivers Lewis is now up against are 13 to 15 years younger than him but still with huge experience, well over 100 Grand Prix. So, it’s tough for him.

“Fernando Alonso took a break from Formula 1. Alain Prost took a break from Formula 1. Lewis is in his 18th straight season, and I think it has been tough for him to keep up that motivation up against such hard challenges.”

While Brundle notes that Alonso took a break from Formula 1 and Hamilton has not, the 43-year-old walked away from the pinnacle of motorsport for two years after four disappointing seasons with McLaren. But Hamilton won six of a possible seven titles from 2014 until 2020.

Alonso returned to McLaren in 2015 but never finished higher than P5, which he achieved in four Grand Prix. The Spaniard then re-found his mojo in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Toyota, winning the LMP1 championship and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice.

Alpine then brought Alonso back to Formula 1, which was always his target as the two-time champion still believed he could claim a third. Hamilton, meanwhile, only fell away from the front of Formula 1 when Mercedes went the wrong way under the 2022 chassis regulations.
