Sky Sports F1 pundit and former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok has shared a statistic that might explain why Williams are taking their time to decide on Logan Sargeant’s future.

Chandhok took to social media to talk about the performance of all 20 drivers at the end of the season.

It’s been a difficult campaign for plenty of drivers on the F1 grid unless your name is Max Verstappen.

With 19 race wins to his name, he would have single-handedly won the Constructors’ Championship even without Sergio Perez.

The likes of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been left frustrated by their lack of pace this season compared to the Red Bull.

Virtually every driver on the grid can now relax over the winter break knowing they’re returning to challenge in Red Bull in 2024.

The only man without that guarantee at the moment is Logan Sargeant.

Williams haven’t confirmed Sargeant for next year and Karun Chandhok has shared a statistic that explains why James Vowles might be having doubts over his future.

The best way to scrutinise a driver is by comparing him to his teammate.

Other teams might be significantly quicker or slower and that’s out of your control.

The only person on the grid without a near-identical set-up is your closest rival and that’s where Sargeant might be struggling.

Chandhok shares worrying Sargeant stat with Williams future in doubt

The Sky Sports presenter shared some data on how each driver has fared in qualifying against their teammate.

He also shared the average gap between the two drivers and said: “Just gone through my end of season table for the team-mate Qualifying battle including Sprint shootout sessions…

“Mercs super close, Mclaren & Ferrari gaps similar (great 2nd half for @OscarPiastri), Aston & RBR gaps similar, @alex_albon’s margin was huge – not just the score.”

Albon completed a clean sweep over the American driver, finishing ahead of him in all 28 dry qualifying sessions this year.

Not only that, he had the biggest gap over his teammate compared to every other partnership on the grid.

Now, Wiliams are unlikely to judge Sargeant purely on the statistic that Chandhok has shared.

Sargeant is a rookie while Albon is one of the best-performing drivers on the grid considering the car he’s in.

However, Oscar Piastri has narrowed the gap over Norris throughout the season and outqualified him 8-7 since Spa.

There are plenty of young drivers chomping at the bit to take Sargeant’s seat, it’ll be fascinating if he’s given one more go in Formula 1 in 2024.
