Lewis Hamilton would likely ‘walk away’ from Ferrari if chiefs make one behind the scenes decision

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton faces a make-or-break season in his Formula 1 career heading into 2026.

After a disappointing 2025 season that saw Lewis Hamilton finish 86 points behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, he’ll be looking to bounce back when the new campaign begins in Australia in March.

The seven-time world champion has never fully adapted to the ground-effect ruleset, and Adrian Newey’s comments on the upcoming regulations changes might give Hamilton hope that he’ll be able to rediscover his old form.

However, there’s a lot of pressure on the backroom staff at Ferrari right now after abandoning their 2025 car in April to work on this year’s machine.

Team principal Fred Vasseur doesn’t think the result in Australia matters, given how much will change as the season goes on.

Unfortunately, Vasseur might not have long to prove to Ferrari he’s the right man for the job, and if Ferrari decide to gamble on one replacement, then that could see Hamilton’s time with the team also come to an end.

Lewis Hamilton would likely ‘walk away’ from Ferrari if Christian Horner is appointed

A report from the Daily Mail has shared more details about what’s going on behind the scenes in Maranello.

There are still doubts over Ferrari’s ability to produce a championship-winning car, with Kimi Raikkonen still the team’s most recent champion when he triumphed over Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in 2007.

On top of this, while Vasseur appears to be a popular figure in the paddock, his results as a team principal don’t stand out.

The report asks the question of what would happen if Ferrari decided to bring in Christian Horner to try and solve their current issues.

Horner is being heavily linked with a partial takeover of Alpine, although nothing is currently set in stone.

The Daily Mail suggests that if Horner was appointed, Hamilton would ‘likely’ decide to ‘walk out’ alongside Vasseur, bringing his time with the Scuderia to an end.

There are also question marks over Hamilton’s ability to work closely with race engineer Riccardo Adami.

Adami’s role next season is going to be more important than ever when the new rules on power management and the use of different aerodynamic systems come into effect.

Hamilton will need to know exactly when to manage his battery and when to attack, and clear communication with Adami is going to be key to that.

Why would Lewis Hamilton not want to work with Christian Horner at Ferrari?

Horner has been one of the most successful but divisive figures in Formula 1 over the past 20 years.

The way he built up Red Bull after taking over an underwhelming Jaguar team was extraordinary and was a feat that has rarely been achieved in F1.

However, the battle between Hamilton and Max Verstappen for the title in 2021 saw tempers flare between the two parties.

Horner once encouraged Mercedes to sign Hamilton in a bid to weaken McLaren, which backfired spectacularly.

Although Horner’s relationship with Toto Wolff appears to have improved, and there are no hard feelings between Hamilton and Max Verstappen, it’s unknown whether the former Red Bull boss ever built back whatever bridges existed between him and the seven-time world champion.

If Ferrari did appoint Horner knowing about his difficult relationship with Hamilton, it would be the clearest sign yet that they think they’ve made a mistake signing him from Mercedes in the first place.
