Lewis Hamilton will love what Charles Leclerc just said about him immediately after the British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton fought hard to continue his run of 11 consecutive British Grand Prix podiums but fell short by a matter of seconds to an unlikely contender.

In mixed conditions that the Briton usually relishes, he battled to keep his Ferrari car on track throughout much of the race.

Hamilton would have been considered the favourite to catch and overtake Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg in the closing stages of the race, but he lost time after a late pit stop and couldn’t recover the time.

It handed Hulkenberg a first Formula 1 podium after 239 races, and was met with nearly as much excitement as a podium for the seven-time champion would have.

Ferrari have found a ‘solution’ to Hamilton’s problems and are hopeful that fixes for their rear axle will give their drivers a car that they can compete with.

Without the fastest car, Hamilton tried something ‘impossible’ at the British Grand Prix and pushed too hard at the end of qualifying. It might have cost him a pole position.

Lewis Hamilton will love Charles Leclerc saying he was Ferrari’s ‘only positive’ at the British Grand Prix

Hamilton made an unusual comment about Charles Leclerc after suggesting that his teammate preferred a car with understeer before the race at Silverstone, which is not usually the case.

The two have developed a good relationship this year, and they seem to have worked well together. Leclerc is ahead in the drivers’ championship, though.

Leclerc doesn’t think one Hamilton complaint is ‘necessary’ and the pair disagree about the brakes on Ferrari’s car.

And they may be in disagreement about something else after Silverstone, where Leclerc believes that Hamilton was the team’s ‘only positive’ of the weekend.

“The only positive thing is Lewis’s performance,” he told CANAL+. “At least I’ll be able to observe him to try to understand where I went in the wrong direction.

“I think I have an idea. My setup works pretty well in the dry, but this was complicated.”

Lewis Hamilton matches unwanted Formula 1 feat after the British Grand Prix

After failing to reach the podium at one of, if not his favourite track, Hamilton has now gone 12 races without appearing on the podium.

It matches the longest streak of his entire career, and while he has now picked up back-to-back fourth places, which is a sign of progress, the reality is that he’s still in a difficult spell.

Ferrari are dealing with a ‘not so normal’ issue which forced both drivers to lift and coast at the Austrian Grand Prix, hampering their overall race pace.

They’ve now got three weeks to reflect on the Austria-Britain double-header before returning to Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix, the final event before the summer break.

Recent upgrades have helped them to make progress, but they need to take a few more steps if they are to seriously challenge the likes of McLaren for top honours.
