Lewis Hamilton makes Michael Schumacher comment after achieving Ferrari dream at Barcelona GP

Lewis Hamilton has recalled his childhood memories of Michael Schumacher after joining him in the Ferrari winners’ circle at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

Hamilton failed to score a podium in his first year wearing red, but rattled off three in the first six races of the 2026 season, which suggested he was returning to form.

He said after finishing second in Monaco that a first win ‘couldn’t be closer’, and those words proved prophetic as he ended Mercedes’ perfect start to the year on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton: ‘There’s nothing better’ than emulating Michael Schumacher at Ferrari

Hamilton’s win is an iconic moment for F1 and, in a poetic detail, it comes 30 years after Schumacher bagged his first Ferrari victory at the very same circuit.

Schumacher went on to win 72 races for Ferrari, 57 more than any other driver. Hamilton was 11 when the German moved from Benetton, and 15 when his run of five straight titles started in 2000.

Hamilton raced against Schumacher when the latter made a three-year comeback with Mercedes, and then replaced him at the Brackley outfit.

While he always dreamed of racing for Ferrari, Hamilton wasn’t ‘sure’ if the move would ever materialise. After all, he had already reached his 40th birthday when he made his debut.

Speaking to Spanish broadcaster DAZN after the race, he said: “It’s up there with the greatest moments in my life, that’s for sure.

“From being a kid, watching Michael win those Grands Prix, and having that model of the red car, to being in Formula 1, not really sure I’ll ever get the chance to drive the red car and win in the red car… there’s nothing better.”

Of course, Hamilton’s ultimate objective in making the move was to win an eighth world championship, which would take him clear of Schumacher at the top of the all-time list.

Hamilton believes he can fight for the title in 2026 despite Mercedes’ dominance early in the year. Kimi Antonelli’s retirement from second place allowed him to close the gap to 41 points.
