Damon Hill and Martin Brundle have agreed that Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari win in Barcelona was a special moment for F1.

The marriage between F1’s most successful driver and most iconic team has finally delivered a race win, and it took 31 races to arrive.

Hamilton hadn’t taken victory for nearly two years (having inherited a win from disqualified teammate George Russell at Spa), while Ferrari were on a lengthy drought themselves, dating back to Carlos Sainz’s triumph at the 2024 Mexico City GP.

Speaking in commentary for Sky Sports F1, Brundle said the story of Hamilton’s win would transcend F1. It’s been 30 years since Michael Schumacher broke his Ferrari duck at the very same track.

Hamilton also became the seventh-oldest race winner in F1 history and the first driver to win in his 40s since Nigel Mansell back in 1994.

“It’s a famous victory, isn’t it?” Brundle said. “Lewis Hamilton wins in a Ferrari, like Michael Schumacher winning in a Ferrari. We never got to see Ayrton Senna, sadly.

“This is a front page story, isn’t it? This is not the sports pages.

“That’s an iconic sight. Lewis Hamilton winning in a Ferrari. There’s no doubt about that.”

1996 world champion Hill sounded a similar note on X, writing: “Fairytale story anyone? How about that?!!!”

Hamilton was visibly emotional on the podium when his Ferrari crew sang the Italian national anthem. He won the Sprint race in China this year, but this is the result he was truly craving.

When he left Mercedes, where he had won a record six world titles with one constructor, Hamilton made clear that he wanted to pursue a childhood dream, and he finally got to experience the kind of scenes he had been picturing.
