Lewis Hamilton could play a key role in deciding Fred Vasseur’s future amid reports linking Andrea Stella to the team.
Current McLaren team principal Stella has been linked with a move to Ferrari after it was reported that Gianpiero Lambiase is set to join McLaren in 2028.
As a result of the Lambiase signing, Stella is expected to leave McLaren and potentially return to Ferrari.
Stella is one of the most respected figures in the Formula 1 paddock, and Vasseur could find himself axed if he fails to deliver.
It sounds like Andrea Stella could leave McLaren! How big a blow would this be?
Erik van Haren of De Telegraaf broke the story
2025 was a tough year for the Frenchman, with Ferrari finishing fourth in the standings behind Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren.
Meanwhile, it was previously claimed that Vasseur ‘only has until this summer’ to save his job.
The Scuderia have made a decent start to 2026 and currently sit second in the table; however, they remain a long way off Mercedes.
Hamilton has made a better start too, having secured his first podium for Ferrari after finishing third in China.

Lewis Hamilton could still save Fred Vasseur’s job at Ferrari
Looking ahead, with pressure building amid the Stella rumours, Vasseur needs Hamilton more than ever.
It is no secret that Vasseur played a key role in bringing Hamilton to Ferrari, a move that has since been heavily criticised due to the Brit’s poor first season.
However, with Hamilton more comfortable with the SF-26, Vasseur could still be proven right.
Vasseur will require Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to score frequent podium finishes and even win a few races if he is to convince Ferrari that he remains the right man to lead the team forward.
Hamilton himself has been linked with an exit in 2027, but has previously stated that he is in it for the ‘long haul’.
Fred Vasseur refuses to use team orders at Ferrari – Is he wrong?
What has Lewis Hamilton said about Fred Vasseur?
Speaking about Vasseur last year, Hamilton was full of praise for the Frenchman, labelling him as the ‘main reason’ he joined Ferrari.
He said: “Firstly I love working with Fred – Fred’s the main reason I’m in this team and got the opportunity to be here, for which I’m forever grateful for, and we’re in this together.
“We’re working hard in the background, things aren’t perfect but, for me, I’m here to work with the team but also with Fred – I want Fred here. I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top.”
It is no secret that Vasseur is under pressure at Ferrari, and it will only get tougher for him if Stella becomes available.
However, if Ferrari manage to get their upgrades right for the remainder of the 2026 season, Vasseur could still say he is the man to lead them back to the front of the grid.
