Fred Vasseur has been a key part of Ferrari’s turnaround in form in the last couple of years, so here is everything you need to know about the Frenchman.

Vasseur took over as team principal of Ferrari in 2023, replacing Italian Mattia Binotto, who was blamed for various strategy and mechanical issues that plagued their 2022 season.

Being from France instead of Italy, Vasseur was seen as a throwback to Ferrari under Jean Todt, in which the Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne and Michael Schumacher super team took five consecutive championships between 2000 and 2004 and 72 victories.

Vasseur had managed Charles Leclerc before during his days as team principal for Alfa Romeo Sauber, while the Frenchman had also worked together with Lewis Hamilton during his Junior Formula career.

Vasseur got his first taste of motorsport in 1996 when he formed the ASM team which competed in Formula 3, running the team in partnership with Renault and Mercedes.

During his time as team manager, he won titles in Europe four times between 2004 and 2007 with drivers that would go on to race in F1, including Hamilton, Paul Di Resta and Romain Grosjean.

In 2004, Vasseur joined Nicolas Todt, son of Jean Todt, to form ART Grand Prix. They won the GP2 Series (now F2) in 2005 with Nico Rosberg and Hamilton in 2006, two future teammates and world champions at Mercedes in F1.

ART’s success across GP2 and GP3 established them as one of the go-to teams for rookie talents, with Vasseur going on to create another company, Spark Racing Technology, in 2012.

Spark secured the first contract to supply the chassis for the all-electric Formula E series, building all 22 cars for each of the 11 teams.

Despite resigning at the end of the season due to disagreements with the managing director, Cyril Abitenoul, Vasseur learned the inner workings of the F1 paddock with his experience.

He would go on to become the managing director of Sauber in 2017, taking control of the team midway through the season from the first female F1 team principal, Monisha Kaltenborn.

Vasseur spent six years at the team, bringing in drivers such as Leclerc, Marcus Ericsson, Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.
