Lando Norris is in a strong position to win the 2025 Formula 1 championship after winning the last two races in Mexico and Brazil.
Oscar Piastri’s crash in the Sprint in Sao Paulo and his struggles with low-grip circuits have allowed his McLaren teammate to pull away in the standings. Norris dominated in Mexico and Brazil, giving him a 24-point lead with three races to go.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Lando Norris | 390 |
| 2 | Oscar Piastri | 366 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 341 |
The Brit is on a great run of form, grabbing five podiums in the last six races. He can afford to finish second in the remaining three races and still win the title, with Piastri and Max Verstappen falling further behind.
Norris has been likened to Lewis Hamilton in how he has found self-confidence during the title fight. It was critical for the seven-time champion’s success with Mercedes, and the McLaren driver has found a way to manage the pressure of the championship battle.
If he can hold on, Norris will become the 11th British driver to win the F1 championship and McLaren’s first champion since Hamilton in 2008. For Guenther Steiner, if the 25-year-old seals the deal, it will be more impressive than Jenson Button’s title.

Guenther Steiner says Lando Norris’ title win would be better than Jenson Button’s as he has turned it around mid-season
Button never dreamed of being a world champion, but he suddenly found himself in a position to do so in 2009 with Brawn GP. Emerging from the aftermath of Honda’s exit from F1 after Ross Brawn bought the team for £1, they had a car good enough to win the title.
Button knew from pre-season testing that he could win the championship, and he used the car’s speed to his advantage by winning six of the first seven races. While Button did not win again that season, he built up enough of a gap to win the 2009 title over Sebastian Vettel.
For Steiner, Norris’ title win in 2025 would be more impressive than Button, because he has had to rebuild his confidence and fight to get back in contention. He was more than 30 points behind Piastri after the Dutch GP.
“Even Jenson, as much as people, as you rightly said, thought he didn’t have it, he had it, but he was sitting in a car, which at the time was just at an advantage,” said Steiner via The Red Flags Podcast.
“So he took that advantage home and did a solid season, but he didn’t switch it around from within the season. And the strange thing here is the switch between Oscar and Lando.
“But Oscar did, until five races ago, now Lando is doing. It’s like they, ‘Oh, let’s switch roles now. I’m the winner, I’m the loser’. It’s very weird.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. And I didn’t expect it. I don’t think many people expected this to happen.”

Guenther Steiner admits Lando Norris has ‘proven me wrong’ in 2025
Norris’ turnaround has been hugely impressive, and it is one that Steiner did not see coming. He admitted that the Brit has proven him wrong with his comeback.
“Something I didn’t expect, I would say,” he added. “Because I mean, obviously he struggled in season and he got his stuff back together and if he can hold it together, I think he’s on the way to his world championship.
“Because I mean, he’s doing, he didn’t make one mistake the whole weekend, last weekend. And watching him talk, I don’t know, in one of the interviews before the podium after the race, when he said all the noises, I just cut them out and I didn’t listen to them.
“I think that is one of the things, if he did, he did pretty well, because there was a lot of criticism, mine included. So, it’s like, I admit to that one, but he has proven me wrong and fair play to him, hats off.”
