Lando Norris suffered Dutch Grand Prix retirement thanks to an issue McLaren had ‘never’ seen before

Lando Norris suffered a huge blow to his 2025 F1 drivers’ title bid by retiring from the Dutch Grand Prix, which will also now force McLaren to investigate a greater concern.

The 25-year-old endured his second DNF of the 2025 F1 season on Sunday, while teammate Oscar Piastri won the Dutch GP and took his lead atop the standings to 34 points. Norris was due to be 16 points from the 24-year-old before retiring from second place on Lap 65 of 72.

A 34-point margin atop the standings is the biggest lead that either McLaren driver has held so far. Norris held his best lead of 23 points after winning the season-opening Australian GP. Piastri’s previous largest lead of 22 points came after Norris crashed out of the Canadian GP.

Norris now faces a mountain to climb if the Briton is to overthrow Piastri atop the F1 drivers’ championship over the final nine rounds of the campaign. The Bristol-born pilot will get nine Grands Prix and three F1 Sprints to outscore his Australian stablemate and take his first title.

A broken oil fitting caused Lando Norris’ retirement from the 2025 F1 Dutch Grand Prix

But Norris’ retirement from the 2025 Dutch GP might also worry McLaren, as the nine-time Grand Prix winner was forced to stop at Turn 9 while on Piastri’s tail for the lead after an oil fitting failed. It is a part that McLaren produce, and is not related to their Mercedes engine.

2025 F1 drivers’ championship momentum between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris

That is according to RMC Motori, which reports that the oil fitting that connects the 1.6L V6 Mercedes turbo-hybrid engine in Norris’ McLaren with the radiator in the sidepod of his car failed. Now, McLaren must investigate whether it was an assembly error or a defective part.

McLaren had ‘never’ seen any ‘signs of weakness’ from their oil fitting that failed on Norris’ MCL39 at Zandvoort before it broke during last Sunday’s Dutch GP. But the rare failure may prove costly for the Briton by helping to determine the outcome of this season’s title fight.

Lando Norris will want to respond to his Zandvoort DNF like he did to crashing in Canada

Norris only needs to outscore Piastri by 3.7 points per round over the final nine Grands Prix and three F1 Sprints to win the 2025 drivers’ title. Yet the 25-year-old will likely have to take more risks than his 24-year-old teammate to avoid the latter further building his advantage.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has noted that Norris intends to look forward after his Dutch GP retirement, too. He will no doubt want to register a response to the DNF not of his own making in the same way as the Briton did after crashing into Piastri in Montreal in June.

Norris fended off Piastri to win the 2025 Austrian GP from pole position and bounce straight back from crashing out in Canada. He also won the British GP owing to Piastri’s penalty for a safety car restart infringement and later won the Hungarian GP due to his one-stop strategy.
