McLaren development driver Ugo Ugochukwu is beginning to turn heads within the Constructors’ Championship leaders after a brilliant end to his 2024 campaign.

Ugo Ugochukwu was signed by McLaren to their driver development programme in 2021 after an impressive junior career in karting.

Ugochukwu then stepped up to Formula 4 the following year and after two campaigns at that level, the 17-year-old American joined the formidable Prema team to race in FRECA.

He finished 11th in the championship, winning at the final round of the season in Monza, before heading to the Macau Grand Prix.

The likes of Max Verstappen have won in Macau in the past, with the tricky street circuit testing young drivers to their limits.

Ugochukwu was competing for French team R-ace GP in Macau this year and had the perfect weekend.

The teenager was fastest in qualifying, holding off Red Bull junior driver Oliver Goethe who already has experience in Formula 2.

A disrupted qualifying race saw Ugochukwu maintain his advantage and start the main race from pole where he once again had to have his wits about him with Goethe and Mexican youngster Noel Leon breathing down his neck.

The young American then completed the perfect weekend, topping the final and most important session on Sunday to take victory, impressing current McLaren driver Lando Norris and CEO Zak Brown in the process.

His boss Brown offered slightly more feedback to the 17-year-old and said: “Congrats to McLaren development driver @ugougochukwu for leading every lap to win the 2024 #MacauGP.

“Excellent skill and determination to navigate a tricky race. We’re proud!

“Ugo picks up the trophy previously won by legends like Senna and Schumacher and is the first American to win it in over 40 years! Mega!”

McLaren’s pathway to F1 opening up for Ugo Ugochukwu

Ugochukwu will begin his maiden Formula 3 campaign with Prema next season, racing alongside Leon and the son of former F1 driver Luca Badoer; Brando.

It is a strong lineup already, although Ugochukwu will be under no illusions that he needs to have a decent rookie campaign to potentially earn an immediate promotion into Formula 2.

He may not be in any rush to prove to McLaren that he’s ready for Formula 1 though.

Both Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri are tied down to long-term contracts and are potentially three races away from sealing a historic Constructors’ Championship.

Brown and team principal Andrea Stella won’t want to part with either driver any time soon, making Ugochukwu’s immediate prospects seem dim at best.

The likes of Pato O’Ward and Ryo Hirakawa are more senior in the system than the young American, but their pathways don’t appear to lead to F1.

Gabriel Bortoleto will leave McLaren for Sauber at the end of the year to make the step up to Formula 1.

He’s currently leading the F2 championship after winning Formula 3 in his rookie campaign in 2023, but that wasn’t enough to earn Bortoleto a race seat with McLaren.

Ugochukwu needs to put himself in the conversation first before McLaren decide whether they’ve got a driver conundrum on their hands.

The 17-year-old’s performance in Macau proved that he certainly has the potential to race against the very best.
