Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz became only the second driver in the last ten races to convert a pole position into victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
The last driver to achieve that feat was McLaren star Lando Norris at the night race in Singapore when he finally shook off his reputation of not being able to lead a lap after starting from first place.
Ironically, Carlos Sainz failed to hold onto the lead on the long run down to turn one in Mexico City.
He was starting alongside Max Verstappen and the Dutchman achieved another notoriously strong start to dive down the inside of the Spaniard.
However, the safety car came out after Yuki Tsunoda crashed with Alex Albon and after the restart, Sainz achieved what Norris had failed to do during the past two races.

The Ferrari driver had a far superior car to Verstappen and completed a clean overtake on the 27-year-old.

After his penalty in Austin, Norris appeared to momentarily consider giving the place straight back to Verstappen after having to take evasive action and go across the grass.
While he did maintain second, he allowed Sainz to pass him and that was pivotal to the Spaniard’s victory.
Verstappen dived down the inside of turn seven, pushing Norris off the track and failing to stay within track limits when completing an overtake of his own.
This also allowed Charles Leclerc to go through and gave Norris a mountain to climb to win the race.
Norris eventually finished second, benefitting from a huge moment from Leclerc in the closing stages that nearly ended in a terrifying crash coming out of the final corner.
After the race, Norris sent his old McLaren teammate a message on Instagram and simply said: “Things you love to see. Bravo Carlitos.”

Carlos Sainz dominated the Mexican Grand Prix weekend from start to finish
After momentarily losing the lead of the race, Sainz urged Ferrari to tell Leclerc to give him some breathing space out in front.
However, they knew they couldn’t allow the Monegasque to take his foot off the gas as Norris proved with a fantastic second stint.
Sainz was imperious in qualifying as well, setting two laps that were good enough for pole position.
Martin Brundle couldn’t help but laugh at one of Sainz’s radio messages after it was confirmed he had secured the sixth pole position of his F1 career.
His move away from Ferrari in the winter is already confirmed and he has four more races to impress with the iconic Italian team before making the switch to Williams.
