McLaren driver Lando Norris was the main event in Mexico last night and he particularly enjoyed overtaking old teammate Daniel Ricciardo towards the end of the race.

Norris was speaking to Sky Sports F1 (29/10 10:45pm) after an eventful race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The star of the show should have been Sergio Perez yesterday with a huge crowd cheering him on.

Unfortunately, his race lasted just 800 metres before a big collision with Charles Leclerc into the first corner ended his hopes of a third straight home podium.

There was a worry that swathes of the crowd would depart once Perez retired, but the vast majority of fans stayed and witnessed some fantastic action.

One driver in particular made sure the under-pressure Perez’s absence didn’t hamper the atmosphere too much.

Lando Norris was a man possessed in his McLaren starting 17th on the grid after a disappointing qualifying performance.

He surged through the pack ending up ahead of his teammate Oscar Piastri and George Russell in his Mercedes by the time he took the chequered flag.

However, Norris admitted it was his move on Daniel Ricciardo in Mexico that he enjoyed the most.

It was a seriously bold move that required both drivers to have a huge amount of trust in each other.

As much as Ricciardo would have wanted to protect a precious sixth place, he couldn’t afford to tangle with Norris and sacrifice a top-ten finish altogether.

Norris names Ricciardo move as his favourite in Mexico

Asked which his best overtake on the day was, Norris said: “Probably the one on Daniel [Ricciardo]. Yeah I mean, he’s the king of late breaking so!

“I think we must have been like very, very close. I braked earlier than I think he thought I would and then he braked and I just got off the brake and got him on the outside.

“I would have wanted to hit him if I could! It would have been even more fun but they’re all good fun, whenever you’re racing, whenever you’re doing these overtakes and having to prepare exits, you enjoy the whole thing.

“So, I don’t really mind who it is, they’re all good.”

Norris and Ricciardo are close friends from their time together at McLaren and that respect was clear on the track in Mexico.

Ricciardo had driven superbly all weekend for AlphaTauri to qualify in the top four and run in the points throughout the race.

Norris took an unusual line around the outside of Turn 4 and went wheel to wheel with the Australian around the outside.

It gave him the racing line going into Turn 5 and he immediately set about chasing down George Russell.

The race was a case of what if for Norris ultimately, as he would have been challenging for a podium had he not been eliminated in Q1 on Saturday.
