Lando Norris has faced numerous problems in his bid to become Formula 1 world champion. Many of them have been caused by himself.

The Brit is notorious for being self-critical and attacking himself for the mistakes he makes on track. This is something that has been widely criticised by fans and pundits alike, with Jacques Villeneuve saying Norris is too open with his feelings.

Norris has admitted he puts pressure on himself, which results in him beating himself down when he does not perform to expectations. The 25-year-old lost the 2024 title to Max Verstappen, despite having the fastest car for the second half of the season.

Norris made countless mistakes that cost his title push, and he was determined to put that behind him in 2025, with many backing the Brit as the favourite. While the MCL39 is the dominant force of the grid, errors have again plagued him, notably in qualifying.

McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri has had the upper hand this season with five wins and four pole positions. But Norris has kept himself motivated as he tries to swing the momentum back in his favour.

Lando Norris outlines McLaren as his biggest motivation to achieve his goal of being a world champion

After Norris crashed with Piastri at the Canadian GP, the former has kept a level head and sought to get back into the title race. He issued the perfect response by claiming back-to-back wins in Austria and Silverstone, marking the first time he has won consecutive races.

Sitting just eight points behind his teammate, he is edging closer to achieving his ‘big goal’ in F1. In an interview with McLaren via their YouTube channel, Norris sees the team as his biggest motivation as he surrounds himself with the ‘correct people’.

“My biggest source of motivation? My team, people with the correct understanding, the correct knowledge, people who can work together, motivate one another, support one another.

“My big goal is just to win a drivers’ championship. The hardest goal of them all is to achieve that and I’m sure it’s an incredible feeling.

“So that’s my goal. I just want to win.”

Lando Norris faces a tense battle with Oscar Piastri in the second half of 2025

As the 2025 championship enters the second half of the season, Norris will be determined to keep up the momentum and take the fight to his teammate.

Damon Hill says Norris is becoming ‘dangerous’ in the title battle. He has his head in the right mindset after his major setback in Canada and has looked to rectify his mistakes.

However, he will still face a tough test from the other side of the McLaren garage, especially when Piastri may have fixed his ‘biggest complaint’ with the MCL39 in how unpredictable it is. This should worry Norris, given how strong the Aussie has proven to be in 2025.

The pair will be given the freedom to fight, with McLaren CEO Zak Brown saying ‘may the best man win’. Norris may have the momentum in his favour, but Piastri has found a new level of performance that has proven tough for his teammate to compete with.
