Lando Norris has raced against some of Formula 1’s biggest names since making his debut in 2019, and he has narrowed them down to his top four favourites.
The Brit joined McLaren in 2019 as the team were beginning to rebuild from a torrid spell with Honda engines. Fast forward to 2026, and Norris is the defending F1 world champion, joining the elite names of the sport.
Where does Norris rank?
He battled hard with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and four-time champion Max Verstappen, beating the latter by just two points. Norris has a great relationship with the Red Bull star, but he does not appear on his favourite drivers list.
Norris once named Jackie Stewart as his dream teammate, but he does not feature either. Instead, the 25-year-old has opted for four other world champions, including two British McLaren stars.

Lewis Hamilton features in Lando Norris’ top four favourite F1 drivers alongside Jenson Button
Speaking via McLaren’s official website, Norris named his top four favourite drivers of all time. Featured in his list were former McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, who were teammates at the team from 2010 to 2012.
Hamilton clinched his maiden F1 title with the Woking outfit in 2008, having missed out by just one point to Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. Button joined McLaren the year following his championship win with Brawn in 2009.
Norris grew up watching the pair in F1, and he spoke of them as huge inspirations for his career before he too joined McLaren.
“Starting with two Brits: Jenson and Lewis,” said Norris. “These were the guys I watched as a kid. These are the guys I supported as a kid and inspired me as a kid. So, two Brits, two incredible drivers, two McLaren drivers. Yeah, two of my favourites.”

Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso are also named as Lando Norris’ favourite F1 drivers
Sebastian Vettel was third on his list, with Norris being inspired by his personality and helmet designs. Vettel texted Norris during his 2025 title-winning season, offering advice to the McLaren star.
He added: “Three and four, a bit trickier. So, number three, I’m probably going to have to go with Seb Vettel. Also because he’s a lovely guy, he’s a good guy.

“Growing up, when I was starting car racing was when he was winning his championships with Red Bull, so for me to kind of see that, experience it, he was a passionate guy, always was stylish with his helmets. So, was a different driver for me in that case and is number three on my list.”
Finally, Norris chose Fernando Alonso as his fourth favourite. He had the privilege of working with the Spaniard before replacing him at McLaren in 2019, with Alonso being very impressed by Norris during the 24 Hours of Daytona the year before.
“Number four, I’ll probably go with Fernando,” he said. “Again, a guy I watched growing up. A guy I kind of experienced in my first couple years of joining McLaren when he was still racing in McLaren. Just a good personality, lovely person, someone I get on well with, and just a nice guy.”
