Lando Norris explains why it’s ‘difficult’ to celebrate his 2025 F1 title with Oscar Piastri

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri went head-to-head for the 2025 Formula 1 title, but it was the former who came out on top.

The McLaren duo won seven races each as they clinched the constructors’ championship in commanding fashion. The Woking outfit were desperate to win their first drivers’ title in 2025 since 2008, and it was Norris who delivered the goods.

The championship went down to the final race in Abu Dhabi, with Max Verstappen splitting the McLarens in the standings heading into the weekend. The Dutchman claimed his eighth win of the season, but it was not enough, as Norris secured the title with P3.

Only two points separated the drivers, with Piastri finishing 13 points behind in third. He had been leading by 34 points after Zandvoort, but Norris’ incredible turnaround and consistency after that race gave him the crown.

Piastri congratulated Norris on social media, among several other drivers and key figures. Celebrations would have been in full force in Abu Dhabi at McLaren, but the 2025 champion has admitted he will find it ‘difficult’.

Speaking to the official F1 YouTube channel after winning his first title, Norris explained that it is a ‘tricky situation’ between him and Piastri. He admitted that he did not know how to go about the evening, given that the pair are teammates and title rivals.

“I don’t know how I’m meant to like, say thanks to them or credit them or congratulate them. Like, I don’t know what really is the correct thing to do,” said Norris.

“It’s a tricky situation, because I want to go out and celebrate with Oscar, but it’s difficult at the same time because he’s your teammate.

“And then, I know he’s going to be thinking of a lot of things right now. and I know at some point I’m going to be in his position in the future and I’m going to be thinking the same things and he’s probably going to be sat here talking to you.

“So, it’s very difficult to understand those kind of moments. But that’s just because that’s the kind of person I am. I don’t want to make him feel bad or rub it in anyone’s face or whatever.

“It’s a weird way to go about things, but yeah, I know we’re probably going to turn up on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning and I do the AM test and he does the PM test.

“We’ll be like: ‘OK, the tyres are doing this. How can we make the car better for next year?’ And we’re going to be working together again. And that’s how it continues to be next year.”

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri showed outstanding maturity after 2025 title decider

Norris and Piastri may have been rivals in 2025 and pushed each other to the limit in their quest to become champion. But in the end, they both showed great maturity towards one another.

Norris paid tribute to Piastri after the race in Abu Dhabi, stating that he made him ‘dig even deeper’ than his former teammate Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian gave the Brit a hard time, having led the championship for 15 rounds.

Piastri congratulated Norris’ family in parc ferme, with Martin Brundle praising the ‘nice touch’. He would no doubt have been disappointed not to win the title, but at least he showed decency to applaud his teammate’s achievement.

Brundle is ‘absolutely certain’ that Piastri will become a champion one day, and it seems Norris thinks the same. The pair will definitely have a close battle in 2026 as F1 moves away from the ground-effect era.
