Karun Chandhok expects more ‘bad luck’ for George Russell in FIA hearing on Monaco GP penalties

Karun Chandhok has shared his thoughts on what an FIA ruling in favour of Pierre Gasly regarding his penalty in the Monaco Grand Prix would mean for George Russell, who was also handed a time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

The Frenchman was heartbroken after his heroic P3 finish at last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix was agonisingly stripped from him after the race.

Gasly was deemed to have surpassed the speed limit in the pit lane by just 0.1km/h, which led Alpine to instantly challenge the penalty.

Upon arrival at this weekend’s Barcelona Grand Prix, the FIA released a statement in which they revealed that the Enstone-based constructor’s right of review was accepted, after FOM provided evidence that the way in which speed was assessed in the pit lane was inaccurate.

Karun Chandhok believes only Pierre Gasly’s Monaco GP result will be reinstated if approved

Following the FIA’s statement, Gasly’s penalty will now be reviewed, which led to fan outcry regarding the status of the other drivers who were handed penalties for a similar offence.

Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto and George Russell were all also handed a penalty for the minor infraction of going 0.1km/h over the limit. However, because they served their penalties during the race, it becomes a bit of a grey area.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (11/06 16:52), F1 pundit Karun Chandhok shared his pessimism for the rest of the drivers who may have been incorrectly penalised in Monaco.

“It’s just unfortunate for George, but I don’t think that just because they can’t unpick George’s situation and give him a notional third place, that doesn’t mean that Gasly shouldn’t be reinstated,” he said.

After failing to serve his five-second penalty at the first time of asking, Russell was subsequently handed a drive-through penalty. All of this was then served out on track, and he ended up in P12 at the chequered flag.

“I think it’s bad luck for George,” Chandhok continued. “He’ll have to take it on the chin. You know, they turned into a double mess because they didn’t serve the penalty in the race.

“But if an error has been made and there is a timing loop error, or the distance error, whatever the error is, and Pierre Gasly has been robbed of a podium, he should be reinstated.”

Lewis Hamilton sympathises with ‘really unlucky’ Pierre Gasly

During Lewis Hamilton’s comments to Canal+ in his Thursday afternoon media duties at the Barcelona Grand Prix, he called for the FIA to make ‘improvements’ to the way penalties are applied as he sympathised with his rival.

He told the French broadcaster, “I think it’s probably more just about making improvements in the future so those things don’t happen. Pierre was really, really unlucky; he did such a great job to get where he was.

“There were a lot of penalties, and some of them, I haven’t seen the actual speed, but I know I’ve been in some scenarios where we’ve been like 0.1 over the speed limit, and it’s like, it doesn’t make a difference.”
