Oscar Piastri will be left wondering what could have been in 2025 as he finishes P3 in the championship behind Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

Winning five of the first nine races, the Australian looked in a comfortable position to win the title. People were comparing Piastri to Kimi Raikkonen, referring to him as the next ‘Iceman’ for his calm demeanour.

He held a 34-point advantage after claiming his seventh win of the season at Zandvoort. However, things derailed for his championship after that as he scored just three podiums in the final nine events.

Piastri made several mistakes, including crashing in Baku and in the Sprint in Sao Paulo. Despite his best efforts at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he ended up losing the title to Norris by 13 points, finishing third behind Verstappen by 11 points.

The 24-year-old was magnanimous in defeat. Piastri congratulated Norris’ family in parc ferme and wrote to his McLaren teammate on social media, showing his class.

Norris was quick to praise Piastri for his efforts in 2025 and how he pushed the Brit to improve. But as 2026 approaches, the Aussie may be left wondering what will happen at McLaren after he lost the number one spot.

McLaren have reiterated throughout 2025 that their drivers are equal and that they keep things fair between them. However, Piastri’s camp think they have ‘come off worse’ far too often at McLaren this season.

Team orders in Monza and Singapore left a sour taste in Piastri’s mouth, and Juan Pablo Montoya thinks he will ask a ‘big question’ at McLaren in 2026. He will wonder if things will change within the team, especially now that Norris will bear the number one on his car next year.

Montoya said via F1 TV: “It’s hard. I think what Oscar said, at least he finished on a higher note, like he found the pace, he found the speed, he found everything he needed.

“The big question for him in his mind is, next year, can I beat Lando again? Is the team going to change? Is anything going to change in the team because Lando is world champion?

“And not only in Oscar but everybody in his camp, people are going to be wondering, do we need to stay, do we need to go? There’s going to be a lot of questions.”

Could Oscar Piastri leave McLaren after 2026?

Losing the 2025 title will be a tough pill to swallow for Piastri. Mistakes have cost him dearly, but so have McLaren’s ‘papaya rules’, which have unsettled the Aussie throughout the season.

The 24-year-old will want to see little to no intervention from his team in 2026. But if things do not change for him, rumours have suggested that Piastri could look to move elsewhere.

Piastri has been sensationally linked with Ferrari in 2027, with Lewis Hamilton possibly set to retire at the end of next season. It might not be the Brit that he replaces, however, as Piastri could swap seats with Charles Leclerc, with the Monegasque driver being unhappy in Maranello.

Piastri could also talk to Mercedes if he decides to quit McLaren. It is merely speculation at this point, but a move away from Woking is entirely plausible if he continues to be overshadowed by Norris.
