Journalist Tom Clarkson has shared what worries him about Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez and his title challenge.

Clarkson was speaking on the F1 Nation podcast after a rather uneventful Spanish Grand Prix.

Ahead of the race in Barcelona, Max Verstappen had opened up a 39-point gap over Sergio Perez.

The Mexican driver struggled in qualifying and missed out on the top-ten shootout for the second race in a row.

Verstappen unsurprisingly put his car on pole position and was never troubled during Sunday’s race.

After going into the first corner ahead of Carlos Sainz, the young Dutchman drove off into the distance.

Perez recovered to fourth place, but Clarkson is still worried about his title hopes.

Competing with Verstappen is already a difficult enough task.

After the 33-year-old’s latest comments, there are even more doubts about whether he’s capable of rivalling his teammate.

Clarkson worries over Perez title challenge

Talking about the Mexican with two wins under his belt this season, Clarkson said: “What is worrying about [Sergio] Perez’s title plight this year is that he talked this weekend about changing his driving style coming into race.

“Maybe trying to drive the car a little bit more like Max [Verstappen] which worries me.

“I feel like at this level it needs to be instinctive, it has to be natural.

“If you start trying to force a particular style on a driver it never really ends well.”

The way Max Verstappen is driving right now is truly incredible.

The Red Bull is by far the fastest car on the grid, but he’s easily showing up his teammate right now.

Sergio Perez is too experienced to be considering changing his driving style right now.

Albeit, the Red Bull does appear to be perfectly suited to the way Verstappen races.

The concerns from Clarkson for Perez and his title challenge will only be shared by half the Red Bull garage.

The sport as a whole needs Perez or someone else on the grid to push the Dutchman.

Right now, it looks like Formula 1 is going to see another processional season.
