Jenson Button tells Red Bull how much time they should give ‘terrible’ Sergio Perez

At the halfway stage of the Formula 1 season, nearly every seat for next year is already wrapped up.

Nearly three-quarters of the grid is already decided with Carlos Sainz the key to how the rest of the seats will be filled.

Former F1 world champion Jenson Button was talking on Sky Sports F1 about one change that might need to be made sooner rather than later.

However, that doesn’t rule out a change being made halfway through this season if a driver isn’t performing to a high enough level.

There appear to be several drivers at risk of this happening to them this year and with the summer break approaching, they’ll be feeling the pressure.

Daniel Ricciardo’s RB seat is under serious threat and he was beaten by Yuki Tsunoda once again.

At Williams, Logan Sargeant produced his best performance of the season during the British Grand Prix but earlier in the weekend was subject to a suggestion that another current F1 driver could take his seat.

The name currently on everyone’s lips is Sergio Perez and he had another weekend to forget.

Button has now suggested that if he doesn’t start picking up results very soon, Red Bull will have to replace him.

Asked about the Mexican driver, Button said: “This wasn’t just a terrible weekend, it was unlucky in a lot of ways as well.

“This isn’t going to happen every race weekend.”

Fellow pundit Naomi Schiff added: “The Red Bull is nowhere near as dominant as it was in the past and Max [Verstappen] has really been having to outdrive the potential of that car.

“Checo [Perez] just hasn’t been able to do the same thing. It’s true that we saw exactly the same thing last year and what I don’t understand is why a contract extension would not give him more confidence.”

Returning to Perez’s future at the £2bn team, via Forbes, Button concluded: “I mean they can’t let it go on forever. If the next race, he’s not scoring points against then I think soon enough, they’ve got to get him out of the car and put someone else in.

“It’s tough, I know it’s not a nice feeling for a driver, it’s horrible, but for them the Manufacturers’ Championship is important.”

Sergio Perez’s strategy sacrificed for Max Verstappen’s British Grand Prix

Red Bull Racing made some odd decisions when it came to Sergio Perez’s race.

He had to start from the pit lane following changes made to his car in perc ferme but putting him on hard tyres looked like an odd call considering the weather forecast.

It was always very unlikely that Perez would get to take full advantage of the tyre life although it gave Verstappen some valuable data for his final stint.

They then put Perez onto the intermediate tyres very early and only Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon and Zhou Guanyu all made the same mistake.

Red Bull kept him on that strategy for far too long and it wasn’t long before he was lapped by his teammate and the other leading drivers he should have been racing against.

In the end, Perez finished the race two laps behind the leaders in 17^th place which will do his confidence and chances of staying with the team no good whatsoever.

All eyes will turn to Hungaroring to see what Perez can do there if he’s still in the car.
