Jenson Button tells F1 fans they ‘cannot forget’ one thing about Oscar Piastri in the title race

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri will know that he needs to find a way to turn around his recent form quickly if he’s going to win the 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ championship.

Oscar Piastri has watched his advantage over Lando Norris and Max Verstappen ebb away since winning the Dutch Grand Prix.

Verstappen and Red Bull have sacrificed some of the work they would have been doing on next year’s car to continue to bring upgrades this season, and it’s working wonders.

The Dutchman has won three of the last four races, while Piastri hasn’t been on the podium since Zandvoort.

Norris has been impressed by Verstappen, but continues to slash Piastri’s advantage after his mechanical failure at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The trio are now only separated by 40 points with five races remaining, and the lead could change hands at the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix.

Jenson Button was at the United States Grand Prix and witnessed first-hand the difficulties that the 24-year-old Australian had.

Button warned Piastri not to copy his 2009 title-winning season, and has now explained what fans who are already writing him off this year are missing.

Jenson Button thinks F1 fans are forgetting how good Oscar Piastri was at the start of the 2025 F1 season

Button was speaking on Instagram in the aftermath of the race at COTA and said: “Who do you think is looking best to win the world championship this year?

“You’ve got Max, who’s taken 66 points out of Oscar Piastri’s lead in four races, which is kind of crazy.

“So you’ve got him obviously looking super strong, maximising everything he has. The car is working well. It seems the new updates are working. Is it going to continue for the rest of the season, though?

“And I think if one of the McLarens gets a weekend together, it does make it tricky for him.

“Lando Norris seems to have quite a bit of confidence, which is good to see. Last couple of races, he’s got some reasonably good results, had some good battles out on track, and taken quite a lot of points out of Oscar.

“I think he’s looking pretty strong, but he’s the second option. The other option is obviously the championship leader, Oscar Piastri.

“The last few races haven’t been great for him. I think he would agree with that, since Baku, which was obviously a pretty terrible race weekend for him, the results just haven’t come for whatever reason.

“But you cannot forget the first half of the year, he has been so strong, so consistent, nothing seems to faze him.

“He’s having a blip. We all have them, and I think that he will come through it. And he’s obviously in the best position possible.

“He’s leading the championship, so they still have to chase him; Lando and Max.”

Oscar Piastri’s past record at the Mexico City Grand Prix amid Lando Norris and Max Verstappen threat

If there’s one driver who will be confident going into the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix, it’s Verstappen.

The Dutchman has won five of the last seven races at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, despite only starting on pole position once and never taking a fastest lap at the track.

Norris has raced in Mexico on five occasions, failing to finish on his first visit after a mistake during his pit stop, where McLaren failed to attach his front-left wheel properly.

Since then, he’s improved his finishing position on each occasion, recording 10th, ninth, fifth and second place results.

Piastri’s two appearances at the Mexico City Grand Prix have both resulted in him finishing eighth.

Last year, Piastri admitted he never wanted to repeat his performance in qualifying after failing to progress through Q1.

If he makes a mistake like that again, then his form at the start of the year can be completely disregarded, and he’ll once again be chasing down Norris in the drivers’ championship.
