Lando Norris comes into 2026 as the defending Formula 1 champion, and he will be looking to keep his crown.
The McLaren driver won his maiden championship by just two points after a tense battle with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. Norris had been over 30 points back after his DNF at Zandvoort, but he produced a stunning recovery to clinch the title in Abu Dhabi.

Now heading into 2026, the Brit could be in a strong position to defend his championship. The F1 paddock sees McLaren as a genuine contender against Mercedes, who are believed to be the benchmark with the 2026 F1 regulations.
Norris responded sarcastically to claims that George Russell is the favourite for the championship. He will be determined to keep the number one plate on his McLaren by the end of the season.
Jenson Button says ‘it’s not hard’ for Lando Norris to win another title with McLaren in 2026
Winning an F1 title is one thing, but to defend it and go on to win multiple is some feat. Yet, 2009 champion Jenson Button does not think it will be hard for Norris to achieve.
Speaking via Sky Sports, the Brit says anything after winning a championship is a ‘bonus’, and that this mentality could make Norris a ‘formidable force’.
Asked if it is hard to win another title, Button said: “It’s not hard, but you need a new challenge. And that’s what this regulation change brings. And you arrive confident, you know you can do it, you’ve done it.
“So, it’s more, everything after winning a world championship is fun. It’s a bonus. And going into a season thinking that way, he’s going to be a formidable force. I really think so.”

Norris says to ‘give me a punch’ if he stops smiling after winning the 2025 title. The McLaren star is brimming with confidence, and he is keen to keep going in F1.
Speaking with Goodwood, Norris insisted that he would go for another title, but if he cannot win again, he would be satisfied.

He said: “I’ve still got many more years in Formula 1, and I will still try and get as many more Championships as possible. If I never do, I’m so happy. I achieved one.
“Twenty years I spent from starting karting to last year, trying to achieve what I achieved, what we all achieved as a team, and then my group and my family, what we achieved last year. It was a lot of time and effort, singular focus, and then it’s done.”
