Charles Leclerc’s new Ferrari contract could be much shorter than first reported, according to Italian ‘sources’.

Leclerc, 28, has been driving for the Scuderia since joining from Sauber back in 2019.

To date, the Monegasque has eight Formula 1 victories, with his first coming at the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix and his last win being the 2024 race in Austin.

Due to Ferrari’s continued struggle to challenge for the world title, Leclerc was previously linked with a move away.

However, on Wednesday, it was announced that Leclerc had signed a new deal with Ferrari.

Italian ‘sources’ claim Charles Leclerc’s new Ferrari deal is ‘shorter’ than believed

Reacting to the news of Leclerc’s contract extension, Sky Sports F1 reporter Craig Slater hinted that there have been different views on the length of the new deal.

He claimed that although some reports stated that Leclerc’s deal will run into the 2030s, ‘sources’ in Italy have said otherwise.

Slater said on Sky Sports: “Always a bit of mystery around those Ferrari contracts. It’s quite hard to get to the bottom of them. In 2024, we learned that Leclerc had signed what was billed as a significant extension.

“Which makes you wonder why they’ve done it again today. So, divergent views on how long he is under contract with Ferrari. You will see some reports suggesting this takes him into the 2030s.

“My best information and all I can call it that from sources in Italy is that it’s rather shorter term than that.

“Potentially, up to 2028 or 2029, when you take in options that potentially his current deal was going to run out either at the end of this year or possibly next year. But, clearly, he sees his future and the potential to win a championship still at Ferrari.”
