As the F1 driver market continues to develop, the next question is who will get the vacant seat at Alpine following the departure of Esteban Ocon.
Pierre Gasly will stay with the team beyond this season having signed a long-term deal, but they must now find a driver that will partner him in what has become a very active 2024 driver market.
Out of the seats available, Alpine has made one of the least compelling reasons for a driver making a switch to them while they sit eighth in the Constructors’ Championship.
Renault is also poised to end its involvement as an F1 power unit supplier in 2025, with a potential Mercedes partnership on the cards from 2026.
With Carlos Sainz making the switch to Williams and Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas reportedly rejecting any offer from Alpine, talk has now turned to Jack Doohan or Mick Schumacher. Speaking on the F1 Insider YouTube channel, journalist Ralf Bach has revealed who came out on top at a recent test.
Mick Schumacher and Jack Doohan’s Alpine test outcome revealed
Schumacher’s case for getting back on the F1 grid grew stronger when Flavio Briatore was confirmed as the team executive advisor, while outgoing team principal Bruno Famin also said it would be a ‘mistake’ not to consider Schumacher.
At the recent test, it was reported that Doohan was the fastest out of the pair, but Bach revealed that Schumacher was better in one other important area.
“Flavio Briatore decides but in the end, Alpine also decides. There was this test and there was a bit of communication to say Jack Doohan was supposedly faster. My information is a bit different,” said Bach.
“He was faster over one lap but also drove in the morning when the track was faster. Mick was much better in the long runs so it could probably be Mick Schumacher. Maybe they’ll come up with the idea, as was the case at Red Bull, to let two drivers share.”

Which drivers could Alpine consider for 2025 F1 seat?
Much like how Red Bull has a pool of drivers, Alpine is not short on potential talent that it could choose to replace Ocon in the short term.
Schumacher and Doohan are the drivers most likely to be considered for the seat considering their recent experience, with Martin Brundle expecting the seat to go to the Australian.
Former Alpine Academy driver Zhou Guanyu was touted as a potential avenue for Alpine if he could offer a financial package in his deal.

F2 racer Victor Martins also emerged as a consideration for Alpine having impressed in his junior formula campaign, but this was considered a ‘long shot’ since he is not challenging for the title.
There are several races left in the 2024 season to make a decision, but Alpine will likely want to get their options sorted before risking another Oscar Piastri scenario.
