Fernando Alonso comfortably beat Lance Stroll once again in the Aston Martin head-to-head last year.
The headline statistic was that Alonso whitewashed Stroll 24-0 in the qualifying battle. He was the only driver to achieve this feat (Max Verstappen only partnered Yuki Tsunoda for 22 races).
Stroll scored Aston Martin’s first 14 points of the season before Alonso finally got off the mark at round nine in Spain. But across the final 15 races, the Spaniard outscored him 54-20.
What rating out of 10 would you give Lance Stroll’s 2025 season at Aston Martin?
Let us know in the comments!
A late surge carried Alonso into the top 10 in the standings, while Stroll finished 16th, level on points with Tsunoda.
Lance Stroll told he would need more than 10 years to beat Fernando Alonso
Alonso and Stroll have raced together for three seasons now, and the Canadian still can’t get close to the two-time world champion on a consistent basis.
Overall, Alonso has outscored his teammate by more than 200 points in that time (332 vs 131). While he’s regarded as one of F1’s all-time greats, he’s also the oldest driver on the grid – comfortably – at the age of 44.
Speaking on the Red Flags podcast, former Haas F1 team boss Guenther Steiner graded Stroll’s 2025 season a D. He was eliminated in Q1 15 times, while Alonso made 13 Q3 appearances.
What would you change on our 2025 F1 tier list?
“Lance stays where he was – D,” he said, in reference to his previous ‘tier list’.
When the qualifying figures were read out, Steiner commented: “From a 44-year-old guy. A good 44-year-old, but still 44 years old. D.”
Asked if there was a point where Stroll could eventually beat Alonso, he replied: “When Fernando is 55, Lance will be 38, I think then it will kick in.”
Guenther Steiner’s Lance Stroll comments landed him in hot water with Aston Martin
Speaking last year, Steiner suggested that Stroll doesn’t want to be in F1. He suspects that the 27-year-old is living out his father’s dream.
As long as Lawrence Stroll owns Aston Martin, it appears highly unlikely that Lance will lose his seat, even though he appears to be underperforming relative to his teammate.
Aston’s Mike Krack said Steiner’s comments were ‘very unfair’, with Stroll painted as one of F1’s ‘bad guys’.
Stroll, who will reach 200 races in 2026, can boast a pole position and three podium finishes.
