George Russell won the Singapore Grand Prix for only Mercedes’ second win of 2025, yet the Briton and Toto Wolff are still to agree on a new contract for the 2026 season.
The 27-year-old has been in discussions with Silver Arrows team principal Wolff about a new contract throughout the 2025 F1 season. But Russell is still set to become a free agent at the end of the year, as distance remains between the parties regarding the terms of his renewal.
It is a matter of time, rather than if, Russell will sign a new contract and guide Mercedes into F1’s 2026 regulations era. Neither camp has a suitable alternative for next season, with all of the top drivers and teams – except for a shock move to Red Bull – already locked in for 2026.
Russell and Wolff are also negotiating the finer details of his new contract with Mercedes, as the Briton’s results this season cannot be questioned. Jenson Button believes no F1 driver is performing better than Russell, a view he even held before the latter won the Singapore GP.

George Russell offers Mercedes a ‘compromise’ to avoid Toto Wolff’s marketing plan
The terms of whatever contract Wolff puts on the table for Russell to stay at Mercedes must be right for the five-time Grand Prix winner to commit his future to the Brackley natives. So, F1-Insider reports that Russell has even rejected several contract offers from Mercedes now.

One of the primary sticking points for Russell is the length of contract that Wolff is currently prepared to give him to stay at Mercedes for at least the 2026 F1 season. Another is his pay, with Russell demanding that Mercedes match Lando Norris’ £26m a year salary at McLaren.
But Russell has now offered Mercedes a ‘compromise’ that would see him agree to an initial one-year contract for the 2026 campaign, providing that it includes an automatic extra year should the seven-time polesitter outscore Antonelli in the F1 drivers’ standings next season.
Russell is willing to ease his desire for a longer-term initial contract as he wants Wolff to also compromise his plan to ‘utilise’ the Briton in an ‘intensive’ marketing and PR role. Wolff has outlined more than 50 marketing days for Russell next year, as he is Mercedes’ ‘figurehead’.
George Russell has complained about his marketing commitments in Mercedes contract talks

The in excess of 50 marketing days would be on top of the days that Russell must commit to F1’s 24-round calendar in 2026, which will also feature six Sprint events. Wolff’s desire is an obstacle that Mercedes must overcome for Russell to agree to the terms of a new contract.
Russell has privately complained about his fitness levels in contract talks with Mercedes, as he feels the marketing commitments that the Silver Arrows already oblige take up too much of the King’s Lynn native’s time. So, he is keen to avoid the commitments Wolff has planned.
It now remains to be seen what compromises Wolff is willing to make to meet Russell in the middle, having already seen the 23-time podium finisher reject a number of contract offers. But a contract will arrive eventually, as they have no real choice but to stay together in 2026.
