George Russell looked like ‘a ghost’ in the F1 paddock after Canadian Grand Prix retirement

George Russell was a shell of his usual self after retiring from the Canadian Grand Prix, as the Brit looked like a ‘ghost’ in the paddock.

Russell was looking to bounce back and stamp his authority on Kimi Antonelli in Montreal. The 28-year-old lost to his younger teammate in the previous three races, and the Canadian Grand Prix is typically one of his strongest tracks.

After winning the Sprint, Russell had an intense battle with his teammate in the first half of the race. The pair fought tirelessly for the lead, running off the track and locking up numerous times, before the No.63 driver suddenly ground to a halt on lap 30.

George Russell looked like a ‘ghost’ after retiring from the Canadian Grand Prix

Russell suffered a battery failure as he entered turn nine, forcing him to stop on track and hand the lead to Antonelli, who went on to win his fourth race in a row.

Jacques Villeneuve says Antonelli was ‘lucky’ due to the mistakes he made throughout the race. But ultimately, he extends his lead in the championship to 43 points, and his teammate now has an even bigger mountain to climb.

Russell was inconsolable after the race, as he was seen throwing his headrest onto the track and throwing his gloves off in anger on the sidelines.

Is George Russell right to apologise for throwing his headrest after his Canadian GP retirement?

According to a report from Autonocion, he was ‘on the verge of tears’ as marshals came to collect his stricken Mercedes from the side of the track. In the paddock, he ‘wandered around like a ghost’ with his head down.

F1 fans have a new nickname for Russell, likening him to Anakin Skywalker after seeing his anger after his retirement. Many believe that he is heading to the ‘dark side’, and his demeanour in the paddock makes it hard to argue otherwise.

‘Tensions’ are brewing at Mercedes as Russell and Antonelli did not look at each other after their battle on track in Canada.

The Brit is clearly frustrated with his situation, and a lot of it has been no fault of his own. He will need to bounce back soon, but most importantly, he has to keep a level head.
