George Russell is now well-positioned to make a Formula 1 title charge as he enters his eighth season at the highest level.
The Briton has been waiting years to have a car that can contend for a drivers’ championship, having joined Mercedes just as they started to struggle in 2022.
There’s a glimmer of hope heading into the 2026 F1 regulations, with the Silver Arrows renowned for starting strong when new power unit rules come into force.
But even Russell knows that doesn’t guarantee success. A lot of other things have to come together for them to be winners again.
Will George Russell win the 2026 F1 drivers’ title?
Let us know why in the comments!
Mercedes are ‘bothered’ by Russell’s 2026 F1 car, with simulator tests posing a few questions about their new challenger.
Russell knows he’d ‘be a fool’ to expect Mercedes domination over the next few years, with multiple other teams having dedicated a lot of time to being fast from the get-go in March.

George Russell’s consistency and reliability make him a 2026 F1 title contender
Mercedes’ ‘inconsistency’ hid Russell’s ‘championship-calibre’ season in 2025, as he performed really well across the majority of the year.
Across the 24 races, he didn’t retire once. Now part of that is on him, and part of that is also on his car, too.
But it shows that he has the ability to stay out of trouble, even in key moments, and crucially be there at the end of races.
The new regulations always throw up curveballs, particularly from a reliability standpoint, as new technologies are introduced.
Mercedes will find it extremely difficult to match the same level of dependability in 2026 as they did the year prior, but Russell’s talent should help make up for that. He has proven that he will challenge.
Toto Wolff showed how much he valued Russell by handing him a strong pay rise, and now it’s time for his driver to repay that faith.

Why George Russell is ready for an F1 title charge in 2026
Entering his fifth season with Mercedes, Russell has been waiting some time for an opportunity to challenge for a title.
He has beaten Lewis Hamilton while they were teammates, trounced a very highly rated Kimi Antonelli, and started to lead the team.
The 27-year-old has shown that he has everything needed to take the Silver Arrows back to the very top over the next few years.
Now it’s up to his teammate to back him up and potentially push him to another level. That’s when they might become an unstoppable force.
