George Russell received another beating from Kimi Antonelli as the Italian claimed his third win in a row at the Miami Grand Prix.

The Brit was backed as the favourite to win the 2026 championship, but his teammate has come out of the blocks firing, having won the last three races from pole position.

Russell has been struggling against his teammate, finishing off the podium in the last two events. At the Miami Grand Prix, he finished fourth in the Sprint and Sunday’s race, with Antonelli extending his lead in the standings to 20 points.

Damon Hill thinks Russell will be ‘slightly depressed’ after his latest defeat. He now has a significant gap to make up to catch his teammate, but he insists that he has not underestimated Antonelli.

George Russell claims he has not underestimated Kimi Antonelli in 2026

Being the experienced and lead driver, many would have expected the Brit to run away with the title. But Jenson Button thinks Russell has lost his Lewis Hamilton ‘bonus’ against Antonelli, as it feels like he has to beat him every race.

But the 28-year-old claims that he has not underestimated his teammate, and he still has the confidence to fight back.

Asked in the media pen if he underestimated Antonelli, he said via Sky Sports: “No, not at all. I mean, he’s a fantastic driver and he’s been exceptionally quick since day one.

“You don’t win all of the championships as a youngster if you don’t have the speed. But I’ve still got the confidence in myself and I’ve also been there.

“It’s just a little bit of a tricky run, but we’re four races down. A long way to go, and I think, as I said, we’ll reassess things over the next few weeks.”

Can George Russell recover against Kimi Antonelli?

Russell has time to reset and go again for the next race in Canada. But many people are beginning to question whether the Brit has it in him to catch Antonelli.

In fact, Juan Pablo Montoya thinks Russell has ‘given up’ already and has accepted defeat. There have only been four races, but he does have a mountain to climb.

Here’s how the championship standings look after the Miami GP! 🏆

Button has seen that Russell is ‘downbeat’ after suffering more losses to his younger teammate. It will not be doing his mentality any good to constantly fall behind Antonelli.

Montoya wonders if Russell can ‘recover’ against Antonelli. That question will hopefully, for his case, be answered in Montreal if he can reassert his dominance.
