Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur faces a crucial second half of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Not only has Fred Vasseur got to find a way to help Ferrari win their first Grand Prix of the season, but his own future is very much hanging in the balance.

Vasseur took over the reins at Ferrari from Mattia Binotto at the beginning of the 2023 campaign.

He signed a three-year deal at the time, and has overseen Ferrari almost winning the constructors’ championship last season and the hiring of the most successful driver of all time, Lewis Hamilton.

However, Hamilton has taken time to adapt at Ferrari, with the SF-25 proving far harder than their predecessor to drive.

Charles Leclerc hasn’t fared much better, although he’s secured four podium finishes for the Scuderia in 2025, while Hamilton still waits for his first trip to the rostrum in Ferrari colours.

This has culminated in Ferrari falling 238 points behind McLaren in the championship, when they finished last year just 14 points worse off than the Woking-based team.

Vasseur is beginning to feel the pressure at Ferrari, and their latest negotiations haven’t gone as smoothly as he would have liked.

Fred Vasseur ‘isn’t very happy’ with one-year contract extension offer from Ferrari

Vasseur will know that Ferrari chairman John Elkann is the main man he needs to impress if he wants to continue with the Scuderia heading into the new ruleset in 2026.

A report from Formula Uno Analisi Tecnica has shared more details about the negotiations going on behind the scenes at Maranello.

They believe that Vasseur has been offered a one-year contract extension by Ferrari, highlighting his importance in transitioning into the next era of Formula 1.

However, it’s been reported that Vasseur ‘isn’t very happy’ with this proposal.

Instead, he would be far more ‘inclined’ to accept a two-year contract, leaving Ferrari and Vasseur returning to the start of negotiations and looking for a solution.

Christian Horner’s availability makes Fred Vasseur’s position at Ferrari more precarious

Vasseur will know that there is no shortage of candidates who would like his job.

Virtually everybody who works in Formula 1 dreams of joining the Scuderia at some point in their career due to the team’s reputation within the sport.

Elkann is considering placing a ‘super boss’ above Vasseur if he continues in the role, having experimented with several Ferrari personnel working alongside the 57-year-old at recent races.

Vasseur is opposed to the idea as he seeks as much autonomy as possible, although Ferrari have never been an outfit who have given their team principals total freedom.

Antonello Coletta is being spoken about as a potential replacement for Vasseur after his successful spell leading Ferrari’s world endurance championship team.

However, the name everyone is beginning to link with Ferrari is the recently departed Red Bull boss, Christian Horner.

Elkann has spoken to the 51-year-old in the past, and Ferrari see hiring Horner as a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.

Whether the more constrained job of running Ferrari is in Horner’s plans for the future are yet to be seen.

It does add an extra dimension of pressure to Vasseur’s job as the second half of the 2025 campaign begins.
