Alpine star Franco Colapinto recently claimed that Argentina has made an ‘absolutely necessary’ step for a potential return to the Formula 1 calendar.

This week, it was announced that the Turkish Grand Prix will be back on the F1 calendar from 2027, with the race being held around Istanbul Park.

In a statement, F1 confirmed that the Turkish Grand Prix will be on the calendar from 2027 and stay ‘through the 2031 season’.

With F1 being one of the most popular sports in the world, other countries around the globe want to feature on the race calendar.

Franco Colapinto says Argentina has taken ‘absolutely necessary’ step for F1 return

Speaking recently at an event held in Buenos Aires, Alpine driver Colapinto claimed that Argentina has taken an ‘absolutely necessary’ step in a bid to return to the F1 line-up.

Colapinto stated that the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez has been completely redeveloped and urged the FIA to bring F1 back to his home nation.

As reported by SoyMotor, Colapinto said: “For me, racing in an Argentine Grand Prix is one of the main things I want most in this life.

“The track looks good to me. I was there in January and saw the circuit before it was dismantled, and I went back now, and it was something completely different.

“It looked like a different place. Nothing is there of what was there before. They’re rebuilding the entire track. It’s a huge project, which I think was absolutely necessary for Formula 1 to return to the country.

“I think it’s on the right track, although there’s still a lot of work ahead. I think they’re taking all the right steps in terms of how a Formula 1 race can be projected from now until 2027 or 2028. I hope it happens, but I think they’re taking all the steps very well, and that’s key.”

Franco Colapinto claims F1 ‘needs’ Argentina back on the calendar

The last time an F1 race was held in Buenos Aires was back in 1998, with Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher winning ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Eddie Irvine.

On Sunday, Colapinto is set to drive an F1 car on the streets of Buenos Aires, something he hopes will be a sign of what’s to come.

The 22-year-old said: “For me, it’s very important to demonstrate on Sunday what a Grand Prix in Buenos Aires, or in Argentina again, can bring. That’s a great first step, that the track is back in excellent condition and ready to host 22 Formula 1 cars, and they’re on the right track.

“The layout is good; we’ll see it first with MotoGP, which will be racing there soon, and that’s the first step, seeing how other categories work.

“On the map and in the project, everything looks very promising, so I’m very excited about that. I know they’ve been having talks, which is very positive.

“Formula 1 needs to have our country back on the calendar and the desire to do so is very strong. I hope these talks are productive, that everything goes smoothly, and that it will make us all very happy.”
