Formula 1 looks set to return to Istanbul Park as an agreement has been reached for the Turkish Grand Prix to make its comeback to the calendar, according to reports.

The iconic circuit first hosted a race in 2005 and was a staple of the F1 calendar until 2011. The Turkish Grand Prix returned for the COVID-19-affected 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Istanbul Park was the site of Lewis Hamilton’s seventh world championship with Mercedes in 2020. After hosting another race in 2021, it has not been on the calendar since.

But rumours that the Turkish GP will return to F1 have intensified in recent months, and now, it looks like it will be back on the calendar.

F1 have ‘largely’ agreed for the Turkish Grand Prix to return in 2027

The Turkish GP is a hugely popular race among everyone associated with the sport. F1 fans would love to see Istanbul Park return permanently to the calendar.

Hamilton has also expressed his love for the Turkish GP, but he stated that racing there in 2020 was ‘terrifying’ due to the track’s resurfacing.

A lot of people want to see the race back on the calendar, and they look set to get their wish as early as next year. Journalist Kemal Sengul has reported that the Turkish GP has ‘largely’ agreed with F1 to return to the sport in 2027.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “The news regarding the Turkey GP is correct; I had also mentioned it in my previous posts. According to the information we have obtained, F1 and Turkey have largely reached an agreement for 2027.”

Turkish Grand Prix could be the latest circuit to rotate on the F1 calendar

The circumstances of the deal are currently unclear, with Sengul only reporting that it is for 2027. Given F1’s plans to rotate European circuits on and off the calendar, it could be assumed that the Turkish GP will do the same.

Spa-Francorchamps will become a rotational track after signing a new contract extension for 2026, 2027, 2029 and 2031. Barcelona will replace Spa on the calendar in 2028, 2030 and 2032, as the Madrid Grand Prix is set to replace it as the official Spanish Grand Prix.

The Portuguese Grand Prix will return to F1 from 2027 after agreeing a deal to host races at Portimao. Like Istanbul Park, the circuit was added to the calendar in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 affecting the normal schedule.

The Turkish GP will certainly be a welcome return to F1. But how long it will be on the calendar for and which track it will be replacing, is to be seen
