Ferrari set to install Chinese GP software update that could make their car ‘more nervous’

As Ferrari look to get their first race win in over 500 days, they are set to employ yet another risky strategy that could backfire in a major way.

Ferrari had to settle for one podium finish in Australia, as Charles Leclerc managed to secure third place. Right behind him, Lewis Hamilton managed to finish fourth.

Hamilton believed he could have passed Leclerc with a few more laps, but was quite happy with the race and how things panned out for him.

In an exciting move, Ferrari will debut their Macarena wing at the Chinese Grand Prix, in an effort to give them an extra boost in Shanghai.

The new rear wing could allow Ferrari to zoom past Mercedes this weekend. But yet again, they’re going to run a risk, this time, with a bold software update.

Ferrari introducing risky software update that could negatively affect drivability

According to FWM, Ferrari are going to be introducing a new software update to help improve their energy management at the Chinese Grand Prix.

However, this update comes with a risk they saw at Bahrain testing, which could impact the car’s stability and handling, and it could require the drivers to make decisions to manage it on the fly.

“Ferrari have also brought a software update to China to make energy management more efficient. The goal is to improve charging and deployment of the MGU-K, especially in medium-speed corners, by keeping engine revolutions high, thus limiting superclipping on long straights.”

“A promising but delicate technical direction, because in the Bahrain tests similar solutions had already highlighted a possible worsening of drivability, with micro-sliding and a more nervous car, behaviours that should also be ‘compensated’ with setup choices.”

This is yet another strategically risky move from Ferrari. If it pays off, it could be considered a brilliant move. But if not, it would be yet another example of Ferrari’s strategy letting them down.

Ferrari must ensure they are making changes they know they can keep under control

Ferrari’s decision to make significant changes to the car ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix is definitely a bold strategy, especially considering how they’ve started the season.

One could make the argument that tampering with a successful formula isn’t a bright idea, as Ferrari’s loss at Albert Park came down to in-race strategy rather than any mechanical or technical shortcomings.

However, Ferrari’s decision to make changes could be a sign that they recognise the value of their performance last weekend, and want to give their cars the best chance at success in Shanghai.

If Ferrari’s new changes can give them an edge over Mercedes this weekend, F1 fans could be in for a cracking race and set up for a potentially thrilling battle between the two powerhouses this season.

It’s good to see Ferrari taking chances in their quest for competition. The Tifosi will be hoping that, unlike the past, these gambles pay off for them.
