Ferrari are in a race against time to develop a new version of their Macarena rear wing so that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc can test their upgraded concept at Monza.

The Scuderia are now set to run a filming day at the home of the Italian Grand Prix later this month to make use of the five-week gap in the F1 calendar, owing to the cancellation of the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. It is thought that Ferrari will visit Monza on April 21 or 22.

Ferrari have enjoyed a strong start to 2026, with Leclerc sat third in the F1 drivers’ standings on 49 points ahead of Hamilton in fourth with 41. But the SF-26 has been a step behind the Mercedes W17, with which George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli have won everything.

So, the Tifosi have held high hopes for Ferrari’s Macarena rear wing since the revolutionary concept broke cover during pre-season testing in Bahrain. But Ferrari questioned the wing’s reliability after its appearance in practice in China and also decided against using it in Japan.

No fierce rivalries, no edge… has F1 lost its spark?

Ferrari aim to test a B-spec Macarena rear wing at Monza ahead of the Miami Grand Prix

Ferrari’s concerns about the reliability of their Macarena rear wing are now playing a central role in their effort to design upgrades to be tested at Monza ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. The Scuderia are working on its structural specification, and they also aim to make it lighter.

That is according to The Race, which reports that Ferrari are in ‘a race against time’ to create an upgraded version of their Macarena rear wing in time for the Miami GP. The Scuderia had initially targeted the Canadian Grand Prix for its race debut, but are keen to move it forward.

However, while Ferrari could run their Macarena rear wing in Miami, the data they gained in China confirmed their ‘fears’ that the iteration revealed during pre-season testing in Bahrain is not race-ready. Ferrari’s Macarena wing caused balance issues around the Shanghai track.

Most notably, the Macarena rear wing caused Hamilton and Leclerc issues in Shanghai when they braked whilst turning because of the lack of rear stability. Ferrari now hope to test their new design at Monza, before leaving a final decision on its use in Miami until after practice.

Safety car pit stops can change everything…

But are they ruining the spectacle and it time for them to be banned?

Ferrari are eager to use the filming day at Monza to work out any issues with their upgrades, especially given the Miami GP is also an F1 Sprint weekend so there will only be one practice session. F1 not going to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia has also removed two weeks of track time.

So, Hamilton and Leclerc will try Ferrari’s aero upgrades at Monza, which The Race notes will primarily include a revised floor to aid the SF-26’s aerodynamic downforce. The pride of Italy are also working on other aerodynamic tweaks, plus possible ways to trim their car’s weight.

Also, Ferrari are working on profoundly revised engine software for the Miami GP, to try and reduce the amount that Hamilton and Leclerc are prone to super clipping. The SF-26 loses a lot of performance on straights at present due to how the Scuderia’s engine regains energy.
