Fernando Alonso will love what Sebastian Vettel has just said about Adrian Newey after his Aston Martin move

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso would have hoped that the 2025 Formula 1 season was going to be an improvement on last year’s campaign.

Although Aston Martin finished fifth in the constructors’ championship in 2024, that wasn’t representative of where they were in the pecking order by the end of the campaign.

Fernando Alonso managed to finish as the best of the rest below the drivers from the top four teams last year, but that sugar-coated his season.

The likes of Pierre Gasly and Nico Hulkenberg were far more competitive than the Spaniard at the end of 2024, while his teammate Lance Stroll went on a run of 11 Grand Prix without scoring a point.

Martin Brundle has seen Alonso looking seriously disappointed, but there’s hope that 2026 and F1’s new regulations will improve Aston Martin’s fortunes.

They will have exclusive access to Honda power units and managed to lure genius designer Adrian Newey away from Red Bull.

Four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has lauded Newey and has shared what he tends to do behind the scenes when he joins a team that will get Alonso really excited.

Sebastian Vettel shares what made Adrian Newey so impressive at Red Bull

Vettel was a guest on the Backstage Boxengasse Podcast and was asked what impact Newey leaving Red Bull is likely to have and he responded, “Of course, a lot of his expertise is now gone.

“Adrian in the experience during my time, he often stood in the garage and listened to us, listened to the drivers, and I would say that he was really able to help and contribute a lot.

“He was never the loudest speaker in the meeting, he took notes, held back, but always listened and then drew his conclusions.

“So, it’s an extremely important position or role that’s being lost, and he can’t be described with just one word.

“Aerodynamicist, engineer or whatever. Rather, he is very diverse, of course, with a wealth of experience.

“That’s obviously a hit, but on the other hand, I believe that in the team, young people are coming along and growing up and are well-positioned.

“It isn’t and has never been a one-man show. I think, as I said, the season is still very long and the cars are relatively close to each other, and you need to be a bit more patient before you really make any conclusions.”

Adrian Newey’s Formula 1 championships

Eddie Jordan believed Newey would be excited to work with Andy Cowell at Aston Martin as the two have incredible track records in Formula 1.

The new facilities will certainly help the designer implement his ideas, and Alonso has shared what Aston Martin bosses told him about Newey’s first visit.

He’s got his work cut out to lift Aston Martin from near the back of the grid to become a competitive outfit in 2026, but Vettel’s feedback suggests that Alonso will be able to quickly collaborate with Newey to get the job done.
