There is a sense of anticipation brewing over Adrian Newey’s move to Aston Martin in 2025 and what it could mean for the Silverstone-based outfit.

Newey’s CV arguably speaks for itself having brought championship success to a lot of the teams he has worked for, most recently at Red Bull where he delivered seven Drivers’ titles and six Constructors’ Championships.

With billionaire team owner Lawrence Stroll investing heavily in the team’s infrastructure and backroom staff, Aston Martin is in a prime position to take advantage of the 2026 ruleset which will see an overhaul of the current aero and power unit package.

Newey’s arrival is significant given that he is known for exploiting areas in a regulation set to gain an early advantage, and while Stroll is reportedly paying him up to £30m-a-year while making him a shareholder.

When speculation over Newey’s next move started, it also emerged that he is managed by former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan. Speaking on the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan revealed one of the main reasons that convinced Newey the Aston Martin project could be successful.

Adrian Newey excited to work with ex-Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell

One of the main signings Aston Martin made to their backroom staff was former Mercedes High-Performance Powertrains boss Andy Cowell.

Cowell was responsible for leading the team that produced the most successful hybrid power unit in F1, which brought Mercedes several years of title success at the start of the hybrid era.

With Aston Martin set to pair with Honda in 2026, Cowell’s role as group chief technical officer will play an important part in their car development.

“Honda being a partner from 2026 will be important to Adrian, because he believes to have a strategic manufacturer online is crucially important, to have Andy Cowell there who we know. What a brilliant man,” said Jordan.

“He was the man behind all of those successes at Mercedes, like a genius. That hasn’t gone unnoticed that he’s now in the fold with them.”

Adrian Newey wants a driver at Oscar Piastri’s level

With Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll’s contracts renewed through the 2026 seasons, there has been talk over whether Aston Martin can achieve success with both.

Alonso will be approaching 46 years old in 2026 and will likely be approaching the end of his F1 career, while Stroll still needs to show he can improve having suffered from two lacklustre seasons.

According to reports, Newey himself has stated within Aston Martin that he would like to see a driver at Oscar Piastri’s level compete with them to get the full potential.

Max Verstappen is touted as a potential driver for the future, depending on whether Red Bull can provide him with a competitive car from 2026.
