Sky Sports journalist Craig Slater has shared the latest information he’s heard about Fernando Alonso and Red Bull ahead of the 2024 season.
Slater was speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast after an eventful weekend in Mexico City.
Red Bull and Fernando Alonso couldn’t have had more different weekends.
The championship-winning team saw their star man Max Verstappen stand on the top step of the podium for the 16th time this season.
He’s breaking every record imaginable right now and could reach 19 Sunday wins by the end of the year at this rate.
After such a fantastic start to 2023, Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have fallen away at the front of the grid.
He scored six podiums in the first eight races of the season but hasn’t finished in the top three since Zandvoort.
Alonso had to retire his car on Sunday and would have seen Red Bull star Sergio Perez in the media pen, who might be sweating over his seat for 2024.
The Spanish legend has been touted as a potential replacement for Perez if Christian Horner and Helmut Marko lose patience with his poor form.
Red Bull are ruthless when it comes to their driver changes and Alonso might fancy driving the fastest car on the grid next year.

Slater discussing Alonso to Red Bull in 2024 rumours
Speaking about the potential move, Slater quickly shot it down and said: “Can we get rid of the elephant in the room which is Fernando Alonso potentially going to Red Bull next year to partner Max Verstappen?
“My understanding is that that is a non-starter, that is not going to happen.
“As much as they admire Alonso at Red Bull and what he can do, he is not above Ricciardo as far as I understand it as an option to drive for that team next year.
“This is not coming officially from the team or anything like that, it’s been out there on the Internet but that is not going to happen as I understand it.
“From what I can gather, some senior, well-placed people have told me that maybe Alonso’s management has been doing their due diligence again and assessing are there any other potentially better options for him next year and perhaps that has been inflated into he’s going to take Perez’s seat rather than Ricciardo.
“But I have it on pretty good authority that that’s not going to happen.”
Alonso essential to Aston Martin getting back to their best
Red Bull are more than likely going to continue with Perez in 2024 even if Alonso makes himself available.
The Mexican driver reflected on the two-time world champion’s weekend in Mexico and thought their luck mirrored each other’s.
Aston Martin need as much experience as they can find to return to the front of the grid next year.
Lance Stroll hasn’t been up to scratch and if they were to lose Alonso in the winter it would be a disaster.
He’s not well known for settling at mid-table teams though and they’ll know how important a strong start is next year.
Otherwise, Alonso will be looking elsewhere for 2025 or hanging his racing gloves altogether.
