Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez admitted he was very sympathetic for Aston Martin star Fernando Alonso after his disastrous Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.

The race had stopped when Perez spoke to Sky Sports F1 (29/10 9:03pm) last night.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t because proceedings had finished but because of a heavy crash suffered by Kevin Magnussen following a technical fault with his car.

The Mexican had a nightmare home race, trying to pull off an incredible overtake on Charles Leclerc going into the first corner but failed to give the Monegasque enough space.

The pair made contact and while Leclerc escaped with only minor damage to his front wing, Perez was sent flying through the air and the damage done by the impact forced him to retire.

Before the race had even finished, Perez shared his thoughts on Fernando Alonso’s tough time in Mexico.

The 42-year-old was still in the race but preparing to restart from near the back of the grid and only fell further behind when the action recommenced.

He ended up retiring running in 16th place with only Zhou Guanyu behind him.

From attempting to win races at the start of the season and running close to Max Verstappen, he’ll be wishing for the season to end as quickly as possible now.

Perez sympathises with Alonso in Mexico

Speaking about the Spanish driver, Perez said: “You see with a lot of drivers that they have bad weekends when they were not fully comfortable.

“I mean, look at the weekend from Fernando [Alonso], it’s not like Fernando is a bad driver, it’s not like he’s struggling to find the best out of his car.

“But this is part of the game and I have no doubts that I will be back for Sao Paulo.”

Aston Martin’s season has slowly fallen apart after such a positive start to the year.

Before Perez and Alonso were retiring from races in Mexico, they were racing for podiums at the beginning of the season.

Both drivers are now trying to hang onto their respective places in the Drivers’ Championship.

Lewis Hamilton is breathing down the Mexican’s neck while Carlos Sainz went level on points with his fellow countryman after his fourth-place finish yesterday.

Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc will also fancy their chances of overtaking the two-time world champion in the final three weekends of racing.
