It’s safe to say that Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll would have expected more from Aston Martin at this stage of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

Fernando Alonso arrived at Aston Martin at the start of last season and immediately hit the ground running as the team took a huge step forward that winter.

Aston Martin’s engineers were stunned by Alonso’s behind-the-scenes work and it paid off as he became Red Bull’s closest challenger and ultimately ended up with eight podium finishes during his maiden campaign in racing green.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest issues Aston Martin faced in 2023 has reoccurred this year.

Six of Alonso’s eight top-three finishes last year came in the first eight races, however, as the season went on, their rivals all made strides forward while Aston Martin stalled.

In an interview with Marca, Alonso has shared his fears that the same issues may be reoccurring this year.

Lawrence Stroll has plans to invest huge sums of money into Aston Martin to try and help them break into the top four of the championship.

However, Aston Martin have lost themselves in their efforts to speed up their car this year with their update packages once again not making the desired impact.

Fernando Alonso has low expectations for Aston Martin’s 2024 campaign

Aston Martin still sit 5th in the Constructors’ Championship although the gap to the top four teams is much larger than last year.

They’re currently being threatened by the likes of RB and Haas during races although they still have double the number of points of their nearest rivals.

Speaking about the progress Aston Martin could make this year, Alonso admitted: “We are not going to give up, but we need to work. I’m a driver. I would love to design the car, but I’m not able to do it.”

Alonso was then asked if further major updates were coming this season and added: “I don’t think so, I don’t think there’s a lot planned, it’s more up to us to understand the weak points of the car, the parts where we need to improve.

“Mind you, I think all that work will be done by 2025, I don’t expect any big leaps in 2024.”

Aston Martin could be boosted by top signings off the track ahead of 2025

Stroll may be getting frustrated by the lack of progress his team are making, but he’s setting Aston Martin up for success in the future.

Aston Martin have arguably the best facilities in F1 due to the new factory he’s built over the past few years.

Their Silverstone base makes them an appealing team to sign for given its proximity to many other Formula 1 teams, something Renault, Sauber and Audi are currently struggling with being based outside the UK.

Aston Martin beat the rest of the grid to the signing of Andy Cowell and his role in their engine department will be essential when their partnership with Honda begins in 2026.

The man everyone in the paddock wants is Adrian Newey after he decided to move on from Red Bull after a phenomenal spell with the team.

It looks like Newey could be on his way to Aston Martin which would be a huge coup considering his pedigree.

Newey has already approved of Aston Martin hiring Enrico Cardile and this super team may be just what Alonso needs to end his decade-long wait for a Formula 1 victory.
