Fernando Alonso has already revealed what will tell him ‘to stop’ amid the uncertainty over his Formula 1 future.
Alonso, 44, is one of the greatest drivers in F1’s rich history, having won two world championships.
The Spaniard has driven for teams such as Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, Alpine and Aston Martin during a career that has so far lasted 25 years.
Due to the fact that he is set to turn 45 years old in July and Aston Martin’s current struggles, doubts have been raised over Alonso’s future.
However, Alonso previously stated that he is ‘not ready’ to step away from F1 just yet.
Ralf Schumacher believes Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso should retire at the end of 2026. Do you think he is being fair?
Fernando Alonso has already revealed what will ‘tell me when to stop’
In her new book, ‘F1 Racing Drive’, Sky Sports reporter Rachel Brookes revealed Alonso has said that the stopwatch or a physical condition will tell him to leave the sport.
Brookes wrote: “The fact that Fernando Alonso is still in the sport in his mid-40s says a great deal. But he says car performance will not dictate his retirement date.
“Others get frustrated when they finish fifth a few times, but I’ve been eliminated in Q1, and I once blew up 13 engines in one season. In this sport, you have to be mentally strong.
“I think at the end of the day, the stopwatch will tell me when I have to stop, or I will have a medical condition that is bad or gives me pain, that could happen as well.
“I know that one day I will have to stop. I did stop Formula 1 already back in 2018, and I came back because I needed it. So, the next one, it has to be 100% for sure.”
Should F1 teams also be given extra cost cap spending room in 2027? 🤔

Fernando Alonso ‘at peace’ with Aston Martin’s current struggles
It has been well documented that Aston Martin have endured a tough start to life in 2026, with the AMR26 proving to be extremely problematic.
Although the intense vibrations seem to have been solved, Alonso recently admitted that he is ‘at peace’ with the team’s plans.
As per Motorsport, Alonso said: “I’m at peace because I understand the situation. The team explained to me that if we bring one or two tenths every race, it doesn’t change our position, we are P20 or P19 and the next car is one second in front.
“So, even if we bring two tenths every race, it doesn’t change our position and it’s a huge stress in the system, in the budget cap and things like that.
“Until we don’t have one second and a half or two second improvement, it’s better not to press the button in production because we waste money.”
