Aston Martin are now doing everything they can to extend Fernando Alonso’s current contract with the team.
Fernando Alonso has more than 20 years of experience in Formula 1 and while he’s won two world titles in that time, his 2023 campaign was one of his best.
Writing on the official Formula 1 website, journalist Lawrence Barretto has shared what he’s heard about the 42-year-old’s current contract situation.
Like so many other drivers on the grid, Alonso has just entered the final year of his contract.
The Spaniard has made a career out of choosing the wrong team at the wrong time it seems except for his spell at Renault.
He dominated teammate Giancarlo Fisichella to win the 2005 and 2006 F1 titles but has had some difficult spells in the sport ever since.
There were a few raised eyebrows in 2022 when he announced he was leaving Alpine to replace Sebastian Vettel.
However, after an unbelievable first campaign, Aston Martin are now desperate to extend Alonso’s current contract.
The legendary driver was Red Bull’s nearest rival at the start of last season and they appeared to turn a corner in the last few races after a tricky period in the middle of the campaign.

Aston Martin working hard to extend Alonso’s contract
Speaking about the 42-year-old’s future, Barretto said: “Elsewhere, Aston Martin will be working hard to sign Fernando Alonso beyond the end of 2024, the double world champion having had a transformative effect on the billionaire Lawrence Stroll-owned team, while Alpine have both seats free as Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly’s respective contracts enter their final year.”
Alonso has already shared some feedback on this year’s car in the simulator and will be desperate for the team to kick on like they did last season.
Damon Hill has hailed the ‘incredible’ Alonso and believes that his experience puts him ‘one step ahead’ of some of his rivals.
Aston Martin must know that if they extend Alonso’s contract then they’ve got the best chance possible of succeeding beyond 2024.
Lance Stroll isn’t a quick enough driver to lead the team given their ambitions and although more experienced drivers might become available on the market, none of them are the same calibre as the two-time champion.
