F1 fans would be ‘extremely disappointed’ if Cadillac ‘waste’ a seat on Ferrari reject for 2026

Cadillac are edging closer to confirming their first Formula 1 driver for their 2026 debut. A host of sidelined candidates are vying for a seat, aware that it could be their last chance in the sport.

Team principal Graeme Lowdon recently indicated that Cadillac won’t sign an active driver. This represents a lifeline for ousted veterans and overlooked reserves.

One report claims Valtteri Bottas has agreed terms with Cadillac. Mercedes back-up Bottas fits the bill given that he’s vastly experienced and decorated, but also available.

Meanwhile, Jack Doohan’s father spoke to Cadillac at Silverstone earlier this month. Doohan lost his Alpine seat to Franco Colapinto earlier in the year.

Now, as reported by Motorsport-Total, former Haas driver Mick Schumacher has confirmed that he’s in talks with Cadillac. He feels he’s in a ‘great position’, with ‘very positive’ discussions ‘ongoing’.

F1 fans urge Cadillac not to sign Mick Schumacher for 2026 season

This report was shared on Reddit, where multiple F1 fans expressed firm disapproval. Schumacher hasn’t raced since 2022, when he struggled alongside Kevin Magnussen at Haas.

Ferrari’s backing had helped the former F2 champion land a seat at the American team a year earlier. But they cut ties with the German when Haas signed Nico Hulkenberg.

After a stint as the Mercedes reserve driver, Schumacher has been focused on his World Endurance Championship duties for Alpine this season.

“Why?” one fan asked after reading the 26-year-old’s latest comments.

Others suggested that Schumacher was only in the frame due to his father, a seven-time F1 world champion. Responses included ‘this shows how far being born in the right family can carry you’ and ‘the power of a surname’.

Another user simply wrote ‘yawns’, which suggests they want a more exciting move. It was described as ‘insane’ that Schumacher could return despite failing ‘big time in F1’.

“I’d be extremely disappointed if Mick gets that seat,” a fellow fan added.

“Waste of a seat,” read a final comment.

How do Cadillac bosses really feel about Mick Schumacher?

Lowdon confirmed Cadillac are ‘talking to’ Schumacher in a recent interview. The interest is 100% genuine.

He’s also indicated that Cadillac like Schumacher ‘very much’ because of the enthusiasm he’s shown for the project. He was described as a ‘very nice guy’ whose testing experience could be an advantage.

The US manufacturer will need a reserve driver in addition to two full-time options. One could argue that Schumacher’s CV is better suited to that role.

Schumacher scored 12 points during his first stint in F1, though it’s worth noting that Haas had the slowest car on the grid in his rookie campaign.
