Lando Norris took his first British Grand Prix victory after a dramatic race which featured changing conditions and controversy.

The Briton finished ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri after he was handed a 10-second time penalty for a Safety Car infringement, forcing him to give up his lead after 43 laps.

Piastri was irate after the race, believing that he should not have been given a penalty because he did the same thing at an earlier Safety Car restart.

After he served the penalty, the Australian asked his team whether they could swap the positions between him and Norris back if they disagreed with the penalty.

Fans took to the social media website X (formerly Twitter) to give their responses to the request.

F1 Fans unhappy with Oscar Piastri after Lando Norris swap request

Piastri could be heard asking his team if they could consider swapping the cars if they were going to protest the penalty, but the pit wall ultimately decided against team orders.

Taking to social media, one fan wrote: “Is Piastri joking? Why on earth would the team and Norris agree to give up his home race win?! Nah mate.”

Another fan said: “Piastri had the cheek to ask to swap positions with Norris after he got a 10-second penalty”

One fan felt it was bad tactics from Piastri: “Dirty that from Piastri to ask for the positions to be swapped!! He was rightly punished!! Lando should not be punished for keeping his head together and rightly won!! The Hulk getting his first podium!! Superb race!!”

Another fan wrote: “Did Piastri really ask the team to swap positions??? Respect to McLaren for saying no. Sorry Oscar.”

Some fans thought he was joking, with one writing: “Why would Lando pay for Oscar’s mistake? Joke that he even asked tbh,” while another said: “Piastri must be joking.”

Oscar Piastri’s British Grand Prix penalty explained

In their document issued after the race, the FIA stewards claimed that Piastri was at fault for breaking Article 55.15 of the F1 sporting regulations.

This relates to what happens under Safety Car, with the regulation stating that you cannot do any “erratic braking” manoeuvres that will “endanger other drivers from the point at which the lights on the Safety Car turn off.”

Piastri admitted in the post-race cool down room that he braked as the lights went off on the Safety Car, with the stewards finding that he applied 59.2psi of pressure.

His speed also decreased considerably from 218kph (135mph) to 52kph (32mph), which is what ultimately earned him a penalty.
