Lewis Hamilton matched his worst finish as a Ferrari driver at the Qatar Grand Prix as he came home in P12.

The seven-time world champion is on a rotten run of form to close out what has been a rancid 2025 season. Hamilton has struggled all year to extract performance from the SF-25, and it was heightened at the Qatar Grand Prix.

“The weather’s nice.”

The 40-year-old qualified in P18 and finished 17th in the Sprint race. Things did not improve in Sunday’s qualifying as Hamilton was again knocked out in Q1, while Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc made it to Q3.

In the race, Hamilton climbed to 12th but could not make further progress due to an early safety car and the Lusail International Circuit being a tough track to overtake on. Leclerc finished eighth for Ferrari, sealing their P4 position in the constructors’ championship.

Piero Ferrari issues ‘guarantee’ to Lewis Hamilton that Ferrari will improve after torrid Qatar Grand Prix

It has been a miserable season for Hamilton, who has labelled 2025 as his ‘most challenging’ year to date. Amid the despair in Qatar, Piero Ferrari, son of Enzo Ferrari, told his drivers that the team will improve, as history has shown.

He told RMC Motori: “After a race like this, there is little to say. It’s a blow and a punch in the stomach. It hurts to see Ferrari like this, but I console myself with the thought that there is still one race left, the last of the season, and then we can put this championship behind us.

“In the history of Ferrari, we have had ups and downs; that’s what happens in racing. It doesn’t console me, but we have had worse moments and we have always managed to bounce back.

“I remember 1973 and the 1975 world championships after a growing season in 1974, the crisis of the 1990s and the subsequent triumphs.

“It’s part of racing, so I’m confident we’ll recover. We have some things that haven’t worked, but I can guarantee that at Maranello we also have many other things that do work.

“The hard part is putting them all together to get the most out of them, and I’m sure we’ll do that. I have faith in the good things we have at home, and as a fan, I hope we can put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

“Ferrari will return to winning ways, we will certainly not give up, I know the excellence we have at our disposal.”

Lewis Hamilton once again calls for changes at Ferrari after the Qatar Grand Prix

Ferrari are in a desperate situation ahead of the 2025 season finale in Abu Dhabi and the 2026 campaign. The mood around the team is one of frustration, especially with Hamilton.

Ferrari insiders are worried about Hamilton as his gap to Leclerc has been increasing. The Monegasque driver has had the better of him in 2025, scoring seven podiums to the Brit’s zero.

The seven-time champion has struggled to adapt to his new surroundings, with him criticising the team’s operation all season. After the Qatar GP, Hamilton issued a firm warning to Ferrari as he called for further changes to the team.

Poor upgrade decisions and strategic errors have cost Ferrari immensely in 2025 as they lack the pace of the top three teams. Many F1 fans agree that Hamilton is not to blame for his struggles this season, instead pinning the responsibility on Ferrari’s shortcomings.
