Eddie Jordan shares why he thinks Lando Norris might be ‘one of the best’ to never win an F1 championship

McLaren driver Lando Norris watched his faint hopes of winning the Formula Drivers’ Championship slip further away after the United States Grand Prix.

With six Grand Prix remaining going into the race at Austin, Lando Norris knew he needed to make up nearly nine points at every race weekend on Max Verstappen to stand a chance of securing his first title.

McLaren have had the fastest and most consistent car on the grid since Miami, but the four-week break between the races in Singapore and the United States gave every team the chance to take another step forward.

Ferrari were the big winners, securing an impressive one-two finish in Sunday’s Grand Prix after team principal Frederic Vasseur admitted the team made some creative updates to their car.

Unfortunately, McLaren’s updates didn’t have the desired effect and they failed to retain their advantage over their rivals.

Norris watched the gap he needed to make up to Verstappen increase after the Dutchman won the Sprint Race and controversially finished on the podium ahead of him.

The race stewards awarded Norris a five-second penalty after he overtook Verstappen off the track, although the triple-world champion also went outside the circuit’s limits to try and defend his position.

Eddie Jordan was speaking about Norris on the Formula For Success Podcast after the United States Grand Prix.

He admitted to being a huge fan of the 24-year-old but suggested that there’s one reason why he might never be an F1 world champion despite his immense talent.

Why Eddie Jordan isn’t sure McLaren star Lando Norris will ever be a Formula 1 world champion

Reflecting on how he battled Verstappen at the Circuit of the Americas, Jordan said: “You know, Lando Norris has been brought up by an amazing, lovely, beautiful, caring family.

“And is there an argument to say that he’s too nice? Yes, possibly.

“The fact is that Lando Norris will go down in the history books as being one of the most incredibly fastest drivers, possibly not to have won a world championship.

“And the reason being, he should have been out of sight on several of the races this year, where, there is not a chance Max had the car that he had.”

Helmut Marko explains why McLaren could cost Lando Norris his first F1 title

Norris is facing an almost impossible task to stop Verstappen from winning a fourth straight championship and may end up looking over his shoulder at Charles Leclerc if Ferrari’s performance continues to improve.

He needs the Dutchman to fail to score points at least one at this stage and in an age where cars are more reliable than ever, that looks increasingly unlikely.

Before racing return in Austin, Helmut Marko shared why he thought Norris would struggle to beat Verstappen.

He believed that McLaren didn’t have enough winning experience as a team to get over the line and several strategy calls the team has made this year suggest they’ve not perfected winning yet.

McLaren weren’t happy with Marko’s comments about Norris, but Marko believes McLaren are twisting his words in order to create further issues at Red Bull.

If Red Bull continue to lose key members of staff and McLaren aren’t about to convert performance into results, Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari could end up being a masterstroke if they can take advantage of this uncertainty.
