Eddie Jordan ‘happens to like’ the idea of Alex Albon replacing Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes but the Williams F1 driver is more likely to get Sergio Perez’s Red Bull seat.

The 27-year-old is a potential candidate to race with the Silver Arrows in 2025 after showing sublime skill with Williams. Bosses in Brackley are on the hunt for the next Mercedes driver after Hamilton activated his release clause and agreed to sign with Ferrari from next season.

Hamilton will move to Maranello following the 2024 season and end his time with Mercedes after 12 campaigns together. The 39-year-old left McLaren after the 2012 F1 season. He also went on to win six further drivers’ titles between 2014 and 2020 to add to his 2008 triumph.

Eddie Jordan likes Alex Albon replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes

Mercedes would need to free Albon from his contract with Williams to see the London-born Thai replace Hamilton. It was thought that his deal lapses following the 2024 F1 season. But Williams team principal James Vowles has announced that Albon is also tied down for 2025.

Vowles’ revelation threw a spanner in the works for Red Bull, who were exploring re-signing Albon. Peter Windsor has reported that the Milton Keynes outfit offered Albon a three-year deal to replace Perez in 2025. Perez is out of contract following the end of the 2024 season.

Williams are loath to let Albon go, too, as Lawrence Barretto also now reports that bosses in Grove want to give him a new, long-term contract. He scored 27 of the team’s 28 points over the 2023 season for P7 in the constructors’ championship with teammate, Logan Sargeant.

The Williams driver is more likely to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull

Vowles is desperate to keep him at Williams, having recently stated that Albon ‘has the skills to become world champion’. The former Red Bull racer delivered brilliant drives at the 2023 Canadian and Italian GPs. He held off trains of cars over both races to finish them in seventh.

Given his performances last year, ex-F1 team owner Jordan likes the idea of Albon replacing Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025. But given his ties ties with Red Bull, a return to Milton Keynes to replace Perez – the driver who took his seat for the 2021 F1 season – may be more likely.

“I happen to like Albon and that could be a possibility,” Jordan told the Formula for Success podcast. “But I do see him as, possibly, a replacement down the road, as a replacement for Perez in some years to come.”
