The Formula 1 summer break started with several pieces of driver news that will impact not only the rest of this season but the 2025 campaign as well.

Red Bull were the focus of many people’s attention following the struggles of Sergio Perez.

However, Perez’s Red Bull seat is safe for now with the team deciding against promoting any one of the several options at their disposal.

The future of Ferrari star Carlos Sainz has been a talking point in F1 for months now with the Spaniard putting off deciding on his next team ever since finding out he was going to be replaced by Lewis Hamilton.

Just over 24 hours after the end of the Belgian Grand Prix, Sainz announced that he would be joining Williams next year.

It’s a fantastic deal for team principal James Vowles who has one of the strongest line-ups in the midfield for 2025 with Alex Albon also confirmed for next season.

Speaking on the Formula For Success Bonus Podcast, former F1 team principal Eddie Jordan was speaking about the three-time race winner’s upcoming move.

Jordan believes that it’s a fantastic signing for Williams who have only scored four points during the first 14 race weekends of the season.

If it weren’t for Sauber’s disastrous 2024 campaign, they would be the slowest team on the grid.

However, Jordan believes that Carlos Sainz Sr. – an accomplished racing driver in his own right – and the 29-year-old’s father, would have had a say on his son’s new contract.

He thinks he would have insisted on a key clause that could see Sainz driving for a top team once again as soon as possible.

While that won’t be in Vowles’s best interest, it may have been necessary to secure his number one target to replace Logan Sargeant.

Eddie Jordan adamant Carlos Sainz has Williams release clause

Speaking about the move, Jordan said: “The biggest news of the last couple of days surely must be Carlos Sainz, the race-winning Spaniard, I mean he’s been fantastic at Ferrari and he will be joining Albon next year in Williams.

“This is a very strong statement by Williams to have secured his services for sure that’s a major coup but I’m sure it’s not without some little issues and I think that Carlos would have preferred to have been with the likes of McLaren, or a Red Bull or wherever, certainly Mercedes.

“I can absolutely be for sure knowing Carlos’s dad that there will be some form of release clause or there’ll be some sort of way that Carlos could get out if something really massive came in front of him.

“But at this moment in time, that’s not going to happen and we have to see how the season unfolds next year.”

Williams currently dealing with a problem that is hurting Alex Albon

The 2024 Williams car is an upgrade on last year’s machine but is consistently scoring fewer points compared to the FW45.

Williams have built a more well-rounded car and they’re not far away from their midfield rivals.

However, they’ve had to sacrifice some of their amazing top speed that Esteban Ocon praised last year after failing to overtake Albon in Canada.

Vowles admitted Williams have created a problem for Albon this season and that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Williams are well aware that they’re on a path towards long-term success and the new regulations being introduced in 2026 may be the first time they’re competitive.

That means Sainz is going to have to be patient, but if he has a clause in his contract like Jordan suggests, then that may not be as much of a concern for the Spaniard as expected.
