Davide Valsecchi has admitted that he would love to see Fernando Alonso replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull going forward.
The Italian racing driver and commentator was writing in his column for Corriere dello Sport ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Before looking forward to what’s set to be one of the biggest events of the sporting calendar at the weekend, Valsecchi wanted to reflect on the 2023 season.
Max Verstappen has established his dominance at the front of the grid, but teammate Sergio Perez has struggled to match his pace.
The Mexican started the season so well, but his form has fallen off a cliff and he’s just going to scrape a second-place finish in the driver’s standings ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
Alonso also struggled midway through the season with Aston Martin going in the wrong direction with their upgrades.
However, the Spaniard is still extremely quick and managed to hold off Perez on the final lap in Brazil to earn a miraculous podium.

Davide Valsecchi has now said he would love to see Alonso competing with Verstappen at Red Bull.
The 42-year-old has somehow managed to go 10 years without a race win and deserves to be in one of the fastest cars on the grid.
Valsecchi wants to see Alonso at Red Bull
The Italian commentator has been blown away by how fast the two-time world champion has been this season and believes he could even give Verstappen a run for his money in the same car.
He said: “Fernando has been challenging the best in the world this year.
“The nastiness with which he fights for a 4th or 5th place is a lesson to everyone: he fights like crazy for a podium even though he has won two World Championships.
“The dedication with which he races for placings at his age and with his career is a lesson in humility for the entire F1 grid.
“I’m afraid we would be disappointed because I don’t have the confidence that a 26-year-old like Max would be able to cope in terms of speed.
“But if he did manage it for a few races, that would be a pure spectacle. Having said that, he still has a lot to teach everyone.
“I don’t know how many, after suffering an attack like that [Perez’s onslaught in Brazil] would still have the heart to try again and attack in the finale.
“It would be great if Red Bull would take him on.”
Plenty of F1 fans would agree with Valsecchi that seeing Alonso in a Red Bull would be extremely entertaining.
It’s a rumour that’s already been dismissed this year but Perez is going to be under constant pressure unless he can close the gap on Verstappen.
Alonso can’t carry on forever and you wonder whether he’ll want to retire driving for Aston Martin if they’re not challenging at the very front of the grid.
It would be a huge surprise to see him join Red Bull, but he would relish joining another top team to try and record that elusive 33rd win.
