David Coulthard has raised a ‘big question’ about Max Verstappen after his appearance at the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Last weekend, with no Formula 1 action, Verstappen, along with teammates Daniel Juncadella, Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer, took part in the Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Team Verstappen were driving the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo and looked on course for victory with around four hours left to race.

However, Verstappen was left ‘absolutely gutted’ after a late ABS problem meant his team dropped from first to 38th.

Despite the heartbreak, Verstappen has vowed to return to the Nurburgring in the future for another crack at the 24-hour event.

David Coulthard raises a ‘big question’ about Max Verstappen after his Nurburgring 24 Hours cameo

Speaking on the latest episode of the Up To Speed podcast, ex-Red Bull driver Coulthard questioned Verstappen’s recovery ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

While speaking about whether F1 and other forms of motorsports could co-exist, Coulthard raised a ‘big question’ about Verstappen’s physical recovery after a 24-hour race.

Coulthard said: “Historically, F1, they would have the Monaco Grand Prix on the same weekend as the Indy 500 just to spite the Indy 500 and try and take some of their audience away.

“But I do think, with Liberty Media, who are the owners of Formula 1, an American company, and the growth they’ve brought to Formula 1, I think there is an attitude of there’s space for us all.

“The best is still the best. Formula 1 is still considered the best form of motorsport. Anyone who’s doing sports cars, GTs, or whatever it happens to be. They would stop that immediately if they were given a Formula 1 seat.

“The big question actually would be, physically, what sort of recovery time would Max need, having attempted to do that 24 hours. Now, I’ve done a few 24-hour benders, and in my experience, it takes 3/4 days to get back.”

With Verstappen already expressing his desire to take part in another endurance race, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, Christoph Sagemuller, has also spoken about the future.

When asked whether there have been talks between Verstappen and Mercedes over future partnerships, Sagemuller said to Motorsport: “One step at a time.

“But I think this was a good starting point. It was a big project for all of us, with not too much preparation time.

“So yes, there is definitely more to come, but nothing concrete at the moment.”
