Although the action on the track at the Hungarian Grand Prix wasn’t particularly enthralling, there was plenty to enjoy as the race went on by listening to the radio communications between the drivers and the pit wall.
Championship leader Max Verstappen was absolutely furious from the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix and will hope his lunge on Lewis Hamilton that cost him at least a 4th-place finish doesn’t count back to haunt him at the end of the season.
The likes of Alex Albon and Fernando Alonso were left seriously frustrated by their strategies and made their feelings known throughout the race.
RB driver Daniel Ricciardo even described it as one of the worst races of his Formula 1 career, highlighting how important the calls made by the team were in Hungary.
However, one of the most intriguing storylines played out during the final stint between the two McLaren drivers.
Oscar Piastri’s superior getaway saw him lead the majority of the race before the last pit stops saw him undercut by teammate Lando Norris.
Commentating on the race for Channel 4, former race winner David Coulthard was listening intently to the negotiations taking place between Norris and his race engineer Will Joseph.
There was one message in particular that Coulthard loved from Norris before he eventually relented and handed the place back to his teammate before the chequered flag.

David Coulthard loved Lando Norris’s radio message before the Hungarian Grand Prix
In order to cover off the faint threat of Lewis Hamilton catching Norris, McLaren decided to pit the Brit first to cover him off.
However, the undercut had been incredibly powerful throughout the race, something that Verstappen was quick to point out to Red Bull after Hamilton and Leclerc both took advantage of the strategy to pass him.
It meant that when Piastri eventually made his final stop, Norris had created a lead of several seconds over the young Australian.
Norris was politely asked to give the place back when it was convenient for him, but when he ignored that message, the communications became more and more desperate.

He was told that it wasn’t the way to win a championship and reminded of the conversations taking place in the team briefings before each race.
At one point, Norris had increased the gap to six seconds and he was told he had ‘made his point’ and that he should do the right thing.
Eventually, Norris appeared to yield and said: “Yes, well tell him to catch up please.”
Responding to his comment on commentary, Coulthard remarked: “Oh ya beauty! Oh my goodness! Did I just say that out loud!”

Jacques Villeneuve now thinks Lando Norris has a ‘big issue’ to solve at McLaren
There will be plenty for McLaren to debrief after the race in Hungary and they’ve now got to decide on how they approach both championships with 11 race weekends left.
The Constructors’ Championship is well within their sights, especially with Sergio Perez continuing to struggle.
However, Norris is not completely out of the picture in the Drivers’ Championship as he now possesses a car faster than Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.
In this scenario, prioritising Piastri for his first Grand Prix victory made sense, but only if Norris doesn’t miss out on winning a title by less than seven points.
Jacques Villeneuve thinks Norris has a big issue with McLaren that he needs to solve quickly if he’s going to challenge Verstappen this season.
Piastri may owe his teammate one after he handed the lead of the race back to him, but that might be easier said than done.
